I'm Not The Drama God -
Vol. 1 - Ch. 20 - Fusioner
"He should have gone back to replace A-Yan."
The carriage moved forward on the gravel road, and Chen Ling sat inside, his face incredibly grave.
He didn't know which part went wrong, causing Han Meng to suspect him so quickly, even going as far as to pay out of his own pocket to send him away and interrogate Chen Yan separately.
But the problem was, all his routes were blocked now.
Even if he went back to replace Chen Yan, leaving the carriage aside, Han Meng would soon replace out. By then, it would be even harder to shake off suspicion.
Next, he could only see how Chen Yan would handle it...
But Chen Ling had already made up his mind. Once his identity was exposed, he would escape directly from Zone two. After all, it would take time for Han Meng to rush from Zone Three.
As for Chen Yan, he was just an ordinary person, unaware of Chen Ling's identity as a Fusioner, or even what a Fusioner was... Even if something happened to him, he wouldn't be implicated.
"Brother, you said you didn't have any money." The man pulling the carriage turned back and said, "Even Han Meng, the enforcer, is reimbursing your travel expenses. Your identity isn't simple."
"Heh, indeed it's not simple." Chen Ling recalled Han Meng's appearance in his mind, feeling a surge of bitterness in his chest. Then he asked, "How much longer until we arrive?"
"We're almost there, probably another ten minutes."
"No need to rush, drive around this street a few more times."
"...Huh?"
"Just drive when I tell you to. Since he's paying by the kilometer, I'll make sure he gets his money's worth." Chen Ling sneered, "Since he's so rich, I'll spend his money for him..."
"So, do I really just keep driving?"
"Run towards crowded places, let people see you, so he can't wriggle out of paying."
"Got it!"
The man continued to drive Chen Ling around, circling the busiest street in Zone two more than ten times. It was evident that the man was also very excited. After all, just the extra distance he drove would be enough to cover his earnings for two or three days.
When Chen Ling got off the carriage, the man's smile almost reached his ears. He wished he could bow down to this god of wealth right then and there.
As he was the only one "forced to depart," it would take a few more hours for Wu Youdong to arrive. Chen Ling could only go to Ice Spring Street alone and rendezvous with the enforcers patrolling there.
As soon as he reached Ice Spring Street, Chen Ling's brow furrowed.
The yellow caution tape almost sealed off the entire street. The air still carried a lingering scent of blood, and the low, dilapidated buildings on both sides were empty, devoid of any figures. Only a few crimson bloodstains splattered across the white walls, it was a chilling sight.
Bending down to pass under the caution tape, Chen Ling found broken rocks beneath his feet, as if a ferocious beast had once appeared here, slaughtering the entire street.
"What's this..." Chen Ling's eyes showed confusion.
In the distance, several figures dressed in black and red uniforms moved among the ruins. When they saw Chen Ling stepping into the restricted area, they walked straight towards him.
"Are you the reserve from Zone three? Why are you here so early?" one of the enforcers asked.
Chen Ling handed over his reassignment order, pushing all the blame onto Han Meng, saying he had ordered him to leave as soon as possible.
The enforcer nodded. "It's good that you came early. We're short-handed here... I'm Qian Fan, currently in charge of Ice Spring Street's enforcement. You'll be working with me for the next two days."
"Okay." Chen Ling paused. "Fan Ge, what exactly happened here?"
"Haven't you heard?" Qian Fan was surprised. "Two nights ago... on the night of the Gray Boundary intersection, a calamity ran into Zone two, killing half the street's residents."
Chen Ling was stunned. "Two nights ago?"
"Yes." Qian Fan nodded. "Didn't the enforcer Ma Zhong from your Third District tell you? This time, with the Gray Boundary intersection, it's very likely that two calamities ran out... one Level Five and one Level Three. The one that appeared in your Zone three was Level Five, but it seems its destructive power was minimal, causing very few casualties... The Level Three one here in our Zone two, although its level isn't high, its killing intent is really heavy..."
Hearing this, Chen Ling's brain couldn't keep up.
He always thought that the one in his mind was the only calamity that had run out from the Gray Boundary... But now there was another one?
"And the Level Three one? Was it captured?"
"If they were caught, why do we need so many people here?" Qian Fan sighed. "After killing people, that calamity disappeared... But some enforcers witnessed its direction of departure. It should have gone towards the back mountain."
The back mountain...
Chen Ling remembered that the back mountain was located between the Second and Third zone.
"Don’t you think these two calamities are strange? Normally, after a calamity causes a commotion, it's quickly captured. On one hand, it's because of their large size, and on the other hand, it's because they can't control their urge to continue killing... But this time, both calamities disappeared simultaneously, as if they evaporated from the earth!"
Chen Ling's heart skipped a beat. He casually asked, "I heard there's something called... Fusioners?"
"Fusioners..." Qian Fan shook his head. "Do you think it's easy for calamity to merge with humans? To fuse with a calamity and survive, you must meet three conditions... First, you must ensure that the calamity won't kill you. Just this condition alone eliminates 99% of disasters because most of them lack self-control. You could say you manage to weaken it to near-death artificially, but then the next problem is ensuring your physique matches with it... It's unpredictable. A human and a calamity are not the same species. Trying to merge the two is like randomly picking up a stone and hoping its natural patterns spell out your name. Even if you're lucky enough to meet the first two conditions, you must ensure that after merging with the calamity, it won't drive you insane... As far as I know, most Fusioners end up insane and don't live more than a few years."
Chen Ling asked, "So according to you, the probability of Fusioners appearing is close to zero?"
"Exactly." Qian Fan nodded. "But I heard that some researchers in the Fusioner faction are studying methods to increase the success rate of fusion... I don't know the specifics."
Initially, Chen Ling had always thought he was a Fusioner, but after hearing Qian Fan's description, he felt something was off...
His connection with the "audience" was entirely based on the theater, and there didn't seem to be the fusion process he described... Although the "audience" occasionally drove him insane.
At the same time, a thought flashed through Chen Ling's mind.
Since he might not be a Fusioner, then wouldn’t it be possible for him to master... his own divine path?
