Chapter 35

The wolf had its eyes trained on me and I did not dare make a move. There was blood dripping from its muzzle and I could see pieces of skin and tendons hanging from its mouth. I knew without the shadow of a doubt that was the wolf that killed the girl yesterday and it had killed someone else. A sob threatened to rip from my throat but I kept it buried.

I was terrified to my core and I wondered if it was going to attack me too. It stood there staring at me with intelligent eyes and then it disappeared into the woods. As soon as it had gone, I wasted no time in rushing into my room. My hands were shaking and I had the sickening fear that someone was watching me. I was more scared than I had ever been in my entire life. I needed someone to talk to.

Without thinking I grabbed my phone. I hesitated over Darius' name then scrolled past and called Serena. It went straight to voicemail and I could feel the tears gathering at the corner of my eyes. There was a girl in the woods out there and even though I knew she was dead, I couldn't help but hope that someone could save her.

Finally, I decided to call Darius. His phone rang and I began to doubt if he was going to answer but he picked up on the third ring. I could hear his breathing on the other end but my tongue would not loosen for me to speak. It felt like I had been rendered mute.

"If you wanted to hear my voice, all you had to do was ask," he began in an amused tone. "Although, most normal people don't call by three a.m. to hear my-"

"Someone is dead."

He went silent at my words and there was nothing but static between us. I would have thought he hung up if not for the shuffling on his end as he presumably got out of bed.

"How do you know that?"

"I woke up and I saw the wolf that killed her. It was brown and it had blood and skin in its mouth. It came from the woods and it ran back in. I think it killed someone."

The sob I had been trying so hard to keep down finally broke free. I had to press my fist against my mouth to prevent myself from making too much noise. Darius cursed under his breath and I heard his front door open and the revving of an engine.

"Stay in your room, I'll be there as soon as I can."

He hung up after that and I crawled into bed and pulled my legs up to my chest. So I sat there, it felt like hours but in reality, it was just twenty minutes and then I heard the bike driving down the street at top speed. I picked it up almost immediately and I heard his voice. "Come out the window." "What?"

"Do you want to wake your entire family or do you want to help us replace the girl?"

In a flash, I put on a more decent outfit than my pajama shorts and tank top. I pulled a sweater over my head and I dropped out through my window. Darius was standing in my driveway fully dressed and I wondered if he was even asleep when I called. He gestured for me to get on his bike and for the first time, I did not put up a fight. I got on the back, wrapped my arms around his torso and he was off.

He drove to the edge of the forest and then he stopped. Goosebumps grew on my skin as I thought of having to walk into that forest and potentially encounter that wolf or the girl that he had hurt but I knew I had to be brave. I slowly got off the bike despite how much my legs were wobbling.

"I'm not sure which way he went," I began. "All I know is that he went-"

"I don't need you to take us to him," Darius cut me off and my brows furrowed in confusion. If he didn't need me then why did he ask me to come out of my room? "I just needed to take your statement. It is protocol and I could have come tomorrow but I figured you didn't want anyone in your home to know."

He was right and for once, I was grateful that Darius acted without inquiring first. He asked me a few questions and it was hard having to recall those memories but I did. I described the wolf to the best of my abilities. I knew I wasn't much help because I was too far away to get a proper look but I gave him everything I remembered. By the time we were done, I was exhausted and I wanted to go to bed.

"Are you going to search for her tomorrow?" I asked and Darius shook his head.

"Ian and the others are searching now."

"They're wolves too, aren't they?" He didn't respond but I had already gotten the answer I needed. "How many of you are there in this town? Is it everyone? Is it most people? Why did you stay hidden for so long?"

"We weren't hidden, we were forced into hiding." I wanted to ask what he meant by that but he continued speaking. "My pack will never harm the humans if that is what you are worried about. I will replace whoever is doing this and put an end to it. In the meantime, do not talk to anyone about what you saw excluding me, Ian or Serena. Is that clear?"

I nodded and he went back to jotting in his pad but something stood out to me. He had mentioned Serena.

"You put me with Serena on purpose." He didn't look up at me but he froze. "You hoped we would be friends because she is loyal to you. Did you make Mr. Hemming fire me too?"

He finally looked up and what I saw in his eyes had me scoffing. Darius was a mastermind because he had planned out my entire life for me.

"What is wrong with you?" I could not keep the anger out of my voice. "You do not get

to stalk someone into being with you. I can't believe I let you fuck me. You are a psychopath."

I turned to leave but he reached out and grabbed my arm. He pinned me against a nearby tree and although I should have been angry, I was more turned on.

"You should be very careful what you say to people," he spoke slowly and in a voice that was barely over a whisper. "Yes, I arranged everything and I am not going to apologize for it."

"You should see a therapist because your behavior is disturbing."

"We found her," he said in a solemn tone.

"Who is she?" I asked and they both seemed to remember that I was there.

"Take her home," Darius instructed Ian and my mouth fell open.

"I want to see her. I want to know who she is. I deserve to know."

"Go home, Leindra. This isn't something you want to see," I started to protest again

but Darius turned to me sharply. "There is no her left to see. Unless you want to see pieces of bone and body parts strewn around then I suggest you leave."
