Born Mine -
Chapter 45
Ian muttered something under his breath that sounded suspiciously like goddess help
me. The room went deathly quiet and Darius finally looked up at me. His eyes were as hard as stone and I swallowed down the knot in my throat and forced myself to keep eye contact with him.
"I am not against tying you to a bed to ensure that you don't leave," he offered up casually. "I don't want you anywhere near Liam again."
"I deserve to know, I was the one he tried to kill."
"Most people stay away from what tried to kill them instead of running towards it. Is that a testament to their foolishness or yours?"
"Stop talking to me like I'm stupid," I mumbled. "I hate it."
"Then stop acting like you are," he ran his hand through his hair in frustration. "The last thing I need while interrogating Liam is to be worried about you. Stay here, I won't ask again."
I let out a groan of frustration and stormed into my room. I knew I was acting like a toddler throwing a tantrum but I didn't care. I was upset. I knew I was wrong by going to see Liam alone but if they had simply told me everything instead of treating me like a child who needed coddling then I would not have felt the need to go searching for answers on my own.
I heard Grandma knock on my door but I ignored her. I was not in the mood to see or speak to anyone. She left after a while and I was grateful for the peace until I heard a clicking noise coming from my door. I froze on instinct when the door creaked open but relaxed once I saw Chris.
"Are you crazy?" I asked and he shrugged and shut the door behind him. "Did you just pick my lock?"
"It is a good skill to have," he walked further into the room and sat at the foot of the bed. "Thank you for not ratting me out today. I'm sorry for what happened to you. If I knew, I wouldn't have let you leave."
"It's fine, Chris. I would never rat you out, you're my brother."
He hesitated before pulling out a twenty-dollar bill from his pocket. "You can have your twenty back since you almost died and all."
I couldn't stop the laughter from bubbling out of me. Only Chris would think to give me a twenty-dollar bill when I almost died. I folded his hand over it and pushed it towards him.
"You can keep it," I assured him and he sighed then put it back in his pocket. He started to rise but I stopped him. "Can you do me one favor? In exchange for that twenty."
"What is it?"
When I told him, he rolled his eyes but did as I asked. He walked out of the room and when he returned, it was with two plates of food. He set it by my bedside table and we just sat there in silence. There was no need for words because all I needed was company and reassurance that someone was right there with me.
I fell asleep very quickly and when I woke up it was a nightmare. Chris had left my room sometime during the night and I was grateful because I didn't want him to wake up to me screaming. I dreamt that Liam was towering over me in his wolf form and ripping me to shreds. It felt so real that I could feel the pain. It wasn't until I woke up that I realized it was a dream.
I dragged myself out of my room and Grandma gave me the awesome news that I was off work for the next two days. I hated being unproductive but I also knew that I needed time to myself so I was grateful for it. I took a shower early and curled up in a ball in front of the TV. Chris went for training while Grandma went for a knitting class with some of her friends.
I hated being alone but for once, the silence was comforting and not overbearing. I found some microwave popcorn in the drawer so I heated it up and ate it while watching soap operas. It was around noon when I heard a knock on the door. I thought it was weird because no one in my family knocked- they all had keys. I turned off the
TV and peered through the window only to see Ian standing there.
I pulled the door open and he offered me a soft smile. He was in jeans and a fitted
orange shirt. He had boots on and they were muddy but there was something else smeared on them that I could have sworn was blood. I forced myself to look away from his shoes and stepped aside for him.
"Would you like to come in?" I asked but he shook his head.

"I need you to get dressed, Darius needs you at his place." I raised a brow at his choice of words and he sighed. "Fine, Darius doesn't know he needs you yet but I can guarantee that he will."
I wanted to refuse but my curiosity was greater than my pride so I rushed into my room and changed into jeans and a simple shirt then made my way back to the living room where Ian had stolen my bowl of popcorn and was eating from it.
"I thought you didn't want to come in."
"I didn't but I smelled popcorn," he said as if it was the simplest thing in the world. "We need to go now before Darius loses his patience and kills Liam without getting any information out of him."
"What's going on?"
"Liam is refusing to speak," he said as we got into his car. "He says he will only speak to you and as expected, Darius doesn't want you anywhere next to him."
He started the car but I reached out and turned it off. He turned to me with a raised brow as if to ask why I turned off the car.
"Why are you here?" I asked and he opened his mouth presumably to repeat what he had already said but I cut him off. "I mean, if Darius doesn't want me there then why are you here? Why would you go against your Alpha? I thought you were completely under his orders."
"We are, but I'm his Beta, he never uses his Alpha commands on me. It is my job to make sure he is making the right choices," he explained and it made sense to me. "Now, are we going to sit here talking or do you want to see Liam?"
The ride to Darius' house was quiet and tense. When we got there, I saw the rest of his group there and they looked between Ian and me with varying expressions. Some were shocked, some were confused and one of them shook his head in disbelief.

"Darius will be pissed," the one named Jared said to Ian. "He specifically said he didn't want her here."
"Did he give an order?" Ian asked and Jared stayed silent. "Here is an order from me, step aside, now."
Jared clenched his jaw but stepped aside. I didn't know much about werewolf hierarchies but I knew that Ian was in a higher position of authority than Jared which was why he stepped away. Ian walked me through the doors of the house and down the stairs. I didn't even know there was a basement in the house until Ian led me there. If you didn't know to look for it, you would have missed the hidden stairwell by the wall. It was blocked by a massive knight statue. The path downwards was lit by torches and the lower we got, the colder it got. I cursed myself for not carrying a jacket with me. As we got close to the bottom, I heard the groans of pain and the smell of blood and urine assaulted my nose. I took a step back because of how pungent it was.
"You'll get used to it," Ian said simply. "Imagine having our sense of smell, you could almost go crazy."
I didn't respond because I didn't know what to say. He led me through the basement which I realized was an elaborate dungeon. There were cells lining the walls and most of them were empty but there was dried blood on the walls and I wondered when they were last used before now.
Darius was in the last cell with Liam. Liam was back in his human form but he was barely recognizable. His left eye was swollen and he had blood dripping down his broken nose. There were bruises all over his body and I doubted he could stand. Somehow, he looked up at me and he smiled weakly.
"I see you heeded my request," he drawled out and I saw confusion fill Darius' features for a second before he turned around.
There was confusion on his face before it quickly morphed into anger. He stormed over
to us but his eyes were fixated on Ian next to me.
"What the hell is she doing here?" he spat. "I have specific orders."
"She needs to be here."
Darius muttered a curse under his breath and before I could blink, he reared his hand
back and punched Ian in the face.
