Born Mine -
Chapter 82
I knew it was absolutely crazy that I stopped us potentially having sex to ask him that but I was curious. He pulled himself off me and helped me up into a sitting position. I expected him to sit next to me but he stood directly in front of me.
Darius opened his mouth to speak but closed it as if he was unsure of whether or not he should be telling me. I could tell he was about to give me some bullshit excuse as to why he couldn't tell me and I was not going to take it. He could demand honesty from me and not give it back. If he wasn't going to be transparent with me then I wasn't either.
"I don't like that look," Darius murmured and I raised a brow. "That look you give- it means I won't like whatever you have to say."
"If you give the right answer to my question then you have nothing to fear. What has been going on Darius?"
"Leindra please don't put me in a position where I have to lie to you. I cannot lie to you about this but I cannot tell you the truth and I need you to just trust me on this one. I am taking care of it and if I feel at any point that you need to be told then I will tell you."
The fact that he called me Leindra and not Baby showed that he was serious and if I had an inkling of sense I would have stopped but I was known for the gracefulness of an elephant. I crossed my arms over my chest and my legs at my thighs. Darius' eyes followed my movements with a sigh.
"Who chooses what I need to know and what I don't?" I asked.
Darius ran his hands through his hair. "I don't want to fight with you. It isn't me against you, it is us against everyone else. I know I'm asking for a lot but just trust me on this."
"Do you know what this reminds me of?" he started to answer but I cut him off. "It was a rhetorical question. It reminds me of when no one would tell me that Liam was the one killing all those girls and I went to replace answers by myself or when no one told me about wolves in Lunarius and I got attacked or when no one told me about my family and I got attacked by your sister. Do you see the pattern here?"
"Leindra-"
"Every single time you have lied to me, something bad has happened to me so excuse me if I am not so willing to let it happen again. What is going on Darius? If you don't tell me then I will replace my own answers and we all know it might not end well, it almost never does."
I knew it was a low blow to force Darius to make that kind of choice. He had barely recovered from the last time I almost died and each time I went off on my own, something bad happened. I knew he would never let me go off again. I hated manipulating him but if it was the only way to get answers then I was willing to do it.
"Fine, but after I tell you, you have to promise that you will not do anything on your own and I am serious about it Leindra. I need you to stay put this time."
"I promise," I offered it up so casually. I didn't know I was going to regret it with his next sentence.
"Your grandmother told me that she thinks your parent's accident was planned and she wanted me to look into it."
There was silence then confusion then disbelief because I couldn't possibly have heard that correctly then it went back to confusion before finally settling on peak annoyance because if she had suspected this all these years then why did she wait until now before saying anything? Why did she not do anything about it then? Why did she not take it to the police? Why did she not tell me or Chris? Why did she sit there doing nothing?
I felt hands on my shoulders and I was snapped back to reality. Darius was standing in front of me with concern etched on his face. I tried to give him the most innocent smile I could muster but I could tell that he wasn't buying it. Darius knew me better than anyone and I was sure he could tell me exactly what I was thinking.
"You promised you wouldn't do anything," he reminded me and I muttered a curse under my breath. "I have it handled, Leindra. I am looking through all the reports and the autopsies. If it was planned, I will replace out about it. It is just a suspicion, it could be wrong. It may have just been a freak accident."
"You're talking like you don't know Grandma. When are her suspicions ever wrong? You know she's right Darius. That is why this is eating away at you so badly because you're scared of what you'll replace but what I don't understand is why. Were you worried about how to break it to me?" he shook his head. "Then what is the problem."
"I'm scared of why they targeted them. Your parents were normal by every standard. On the outside, you would have never known that they were carrying the seal containing our curse. As far as I know, they didn't cheat anyone and they weren't involved in anything illegal."
"You think if someone attacked them then it had something to do with you and your pack," I deduced and he nodded. "Why is it that all my problems revolve around you?"
I made sure there was no bite to my words so he would know I was joking. He was still standing and I could tell he was still worried. I finally stood to my feet and made my way over to him. I allowed my hand to rest on his arms and although there was a storm brewing inside of me, I was determined to pretend to be strong for as long as need be. "We'll figure it out, we always do. I'm sure it isn't what we think it is. We Turners are prone to worrying all the time. I'm sure it is nothing."
"For both our sakes, I really hope it is. We have gone through enough," he leaned down to place a kiss on my lips but paused and cursed. "I have to go, Ian thinks he may have found something. I'll try to be home for dinner."
He left right after and I decided to change for work. Serena and I drove together once more and if she noticed my unusual quietness, she didn't say a word. There were too many things on my mind. I wondered how I had gone from being a broke city girl to the mate of an Alpha who is constantly in one problem or the other.
When I was younger, I used to tell my mother I wanted an adventurous life and I think the universe might have taken the wishes of a five-year-old a little too seriously. I wasn't ungrateful but I wouldn't have minded if they heeded to my wish of having invisibility powers instead.
"Are you okay?" Serena asked once we arrived at the bar and I nodded. "It was my idea to go and you can tell Darius that, I'll take the blame for it."
"He wasn't upset about it, don't worry about it."
She looked taken aback. "If he wasn't upset then why are you quiet?"
"I don't want to talk about it. We should get to work. The bar might be extra busy today."
I wish I hadn't spoken because just as I said, the bar was extra busy. It was packed to the brim and normally we didn't have waitresses but it was impossible for everyone to get to the bar. I had worked as a waitress before so I was the preferred choice most of the time. It took a while to get back into it and I suddenly remembered why I had quit my job.
Too many people thought they could get away with touching waitresses and speaking to them rudely with no consequences. I had to bite my tongue so many times that I would not have been surprised if my tongue was a few inches shorter. I was at my wit's end and I was honestly prepared to just scream in someone's face.
"You look like you need a break," Serena said as I got to the bar to take the next order. "Why don't we switch? I'll take over for a few minutes."
My relief was palpable and she couldn't help but giggle. "Stay away from table five, he's handsy."
"If he touches me, I'll break his arm."
With that as a warning, she sashayed away to do her job. I felt relieved to be behind the counter once more but even that was frustrating. The customers didn't seem to care that we were overworked today, they were loud and demanding and just outright rude.
Everything was going fine until one particular customer. He wasn't drunk, he was just a dick and he knew it. There was someone else in line but he wanted to cut through and
I refused to attend to him until I finished with the people who came before.
"If I throw you a ten will you answer?" he asked condescendingly after I ignored him.
"Or was it a hundred that he threw you before you cozied up in his bed?
