Born Mine
Chapter 89

I sat in my car in front of Brandon's apartment wondering if I was making the right decision. I wanted to get out but it was like an invisible force kept me in the car. Something kept screaming at me to turn back and go home but my desire for answers was greater than whatever that was and I dragged myself out of the car. I kept my phone by my side in case I needed someone to come get me quickly.

When I got to the front door, I raised my hands to knock but the door pulled open to reveal a bored-looking Brandon. "I thought you were going to sit in the car forever."

He stepped aside to let me in and I exhaled deeply before walking in. The house was exactly as I remembered except this time, he had set a bottle of water in front of the chair. I picked it up then remembered what happened with Liam and quickly put it back down.

"I don't need to drug you to get you into my bed," he drawled. "I did very fine on my own the last time. I have more convincing tools in my arsenal."

"I didn't come here to take a trip down memory lane," I deadpanned as I took a seat and crossed my legs. "What do you have? I have work in less than two hours so whatever we're doing, it needs to be fast."

"I can have you coming in five minutes and you know it."

I kept my face impassive as I stared at him. He wanted a reaction from me and I wasn't going to give it to him. I knew what he was doing, it was what he always did to get his way. He was trying to deflect and make me feel uncomfortable. It would have worked five years ago but he was yet to realize that I wasn't that same girl.

When he realized I wasn't going to respond, he sighed and crossed his arms over his chest. "You used to be a lot more fun, Leindra. You used to follow me to parties and you would do exactly as I asked. I remember that time I made you strip in the alley so I could-"

"If you're going to do this for the next hour then I might as well leave. If I had known that you didn't have any answers then I would have never come here. I just didn't peg you as someone who had to lie in order to get a woman into your home."

I knew I had struck a chord because he frowned deeply and I saw the vein at his temple bulge. If there was anything Brandon hated, it was being told that he needed assistance. He was a cocky and egotistical fellow and it was always easy to push his buttons. He cleared his throat and sat up straighter.

"I knew who you were before you came to the city," he began and my brows rose. "I can't tell you how but I knew you. I know all about your little band of wolves. I know about the curse on this town. Honestly, you were the only one who didn't know if I was being honest."

"How did you know? Are you a werewolf too?"

"Hell no." He spat as if it were a curse. "I'm part of a league of people we call the Hunters. We're a variety of species- humans, wolves, rogues alike. We have one common goal and objective and that is to rid the world of the purge that are the wolves."

"If you want to rid the world of wolves then why do you work with wolves?"

"We don't want to kill them, we just want to domesticate them. Lunarius has always been a town that did as it wished and the curse brought peace for a moment. The Hunters watched Lunarius and your family to ensure that things remained as they should."

"Why are you telling me all of this now? Why are you here now? The wolves aren't bothering anyone. They aren't hurting anyone. You can't eradicate them."

"I have no business with the wolves. If I did, they would be dead by now. My business

is with you. Your family's death was no accident and the hunters have been investigating for a while. We don't know who did it but we know one thing."

"What is that?"

"They failed."

I thought he misspoke so I waited to give him the opportunity to correct what he had said. When he didn't correct it, I turned to him with an incredulous look. I sat up straighter and cleared my throat because I didn't want to be rude but I needed to understand.

"What do you mean they failed? My parents are dead because of whoever it was. What the hell are you talking about?"

"It was an assassination attempt on the entire family. You don't realize just how much power you hold. You are the first-born Turner of a first-born Turner. Your line carries on with you. You have the power to change the fate of the wolves. If someone had a vendetta against them, you would be the perfect tool. Why do you think I even went after you? I wanted to control the fate of the wolves."

"So basically you're saying I should be wary of you," I stood to my feet. "You didn't need to call me all the way here to say that. I was going to do it either way."

I turned on my heels and made my way to the door, but Brandon grabbed my arm. "You have no idea what you're playing with, Leindra. Come with me, I will protect you. Together we can rule the wolves and put them in line. Wolves were never meant to rule over humans."

I jerked my hand out of his grip and his face turned stoic. "I will never join you. You can take your offer and shove it right up your ass."

I could tell that he was pissed with my choice but I didn't care. I would rather choke on glass than betray Darius in that way. Speaking of Darius, I needed to tell him everything that happened. Serena was right when she said there was something about Brandon, I never would have guessed it. I just thought he was a rogue like Liam was. "Think about what you're doing, Leindra," Brandon tried to sway me. "We can offer you what he can't."

"There is nothing you can offer me that I do not already have."

I pulled the door open and I was met with the pouring rain. I did not realize just how bad it was until I stepped out and it beat on me hard. I rushed into the safety of my car and I turned on the heater. I tilted my head back for a split second to calm my breathing and when I looked up, Brandon was standing by the door of his house. He was watching me intently and I could tell that he was furious.

If it weren't raining, I would have stuck my finger out and flipped him off to let him know that I didn't give a shit about his offer but I couldn't so I did the next best thing, I turned on the car and I pulled out of his driveway. I tried to call Darius but I had no network so I decided I would tell him in person at work.

I drove to work hoping the rain would ease up but it never did. The roads were completely clear and I tried to ensure I kept within a reasonable speed limit. I saw the bar and I tried to slow down on the turning but as I pressed the brakes, I realized they weren't working. Panic seized me and I tried harder but it wouldn't work. I sped past the bar wondering what the hell I was going to do.

I took the road home trying to slow down but the wet floors were not helping and I knew that I was going out of control. I reached out for my phone again and tried to make a call but none of the numbers were going through. I could feel my breath coming out as pants as I tried to keep my head on straight long enough to figure out what to do and how I got into that position.

Brandon never left my sight so it was impossible that he tampered with my brakes. Did he have a partner or was someone else responsible for it? My brakes were working when I left Grandma's house so it couldn't have been then. I wasn't even in his house for up to half an hour so whoever did it needed to work fast.

I should have never gone to Brandon's place in the first place. I should have never gotten out and instead turned and gone home where I would have been safe. Regret slammed into me like a ton of bricks but I tried to push it away. There was no use dwelling on regret when I was driving at full speed on a deserted forest road with no way to stop.

I tried one more number and I let out a sigh of relief when it connected. The bad weather made the connection poor but I figured a bad connection was better than nothing.

"Hey," it was Serena. "Are you going to come in today? I'm already there and I'm waiting for you. If the rain is a problem then you can stay home."

"My brakes aren't working," I blurted out and she went silent immediately. "I'm on the road home and I am trying everything but it isn't working. I can't slow down and the rain is making the tires slippery. I'm scared. I tried Darius but I couldn't get through." "Calm down," I heard shuffling as she moved to a more quiet location. "I'm mind linking Ian as we speak. They are on their way to get you. You can't stop, correct?" "Yes."

"I don't know anything about driving but can you take your foot off the gas? Maybe the car will slow down on its own," I did as she asked but kept my hands tight on the steering wheel. "How long does the road go for?"

"I'm almost at the end, I'll need to make a turn soon or I'm going off a cliff. I'm scared of making a turn with the tires."

"You might just have to. Just try to time it and be careful. You're a great driver, you can do it. I'm right here with you."

I muttered a small prayer under my breath as I took the turn. Everything was going well until my back tire spun and I jerked the car to the left in a bid to regain control. Everything happened so fast that I couldn't explain it. One minute I was fine and the next minute, I was spinning out of control and trying to regain control.

I could hear Serena's voice and screaming but I was fairly certain the screaming came from me. The next thing I knew, there was a loud crash and everything went black.
