Building a Business Empire with my Technological System

Chapter 5: New Missions and Part-Time

"Wow, this system really works!" Michael thought to himself. The Technological System had just saved him from what could have been a disastrous midterm. But now, his professor was suggesting he enter the PSME competition - short for the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers. It was a big deal, and Michael knew his recommendation was only because of his 'cheated' success.

The idea of competing was both scary and thrilling. To prepare, he'd have to hit the books hard. It wasn't just about reading or watching YouTube tutorials. He needed to really understand the stuff, and that was always easier said than done. But with the system, maybe, just maybe, he had a shot at this.

And just as he walked down the hallway, a cheery notification chime sounded in his head.

[Congratulations on completing the mission! Using the System for Once!]

"Eh?" Michael read the notification with a tilted head. Does he really have a mission already? He wasn't aware of it.

[You received: 1,000 System Points and Attentiveness]

[You have two new missions:]

[Mission # 1: Preparation for the PSME competition: You must pass the assessment test given to you by your professor in thermodynamics without using the system's abilities]

[Reward: 5,000 System Points and 1x Neuroenhancer Drug]

[Systems Tips and Tricks to complete this mission: Read books about mechanical engineering concepts and principles. Recommended book: "Fundamentals of Thermodynamics" by Borgnakke and Sonntag.]

[Mission # 2: Healthy Mind and Body - Taking care of your body is essential for improving mental performance. Commit to a regular exercise routine and follow a healthy diet.]

Michael's eyebrows shot up in surprise. The System wasn't just about academics; it was encouraging him to take care of his physical health too. It made sense, though. A healthy body often means a healthier mind.

[For this mission, you must follow a beginner's exercise routine and adhere to a balanced diet for one month.]

[Reward: 2,000 System Points.]

[Recommended Beginner's Exercise Plan: Start with 30 minutes of cardio, three times a week. Include basic strength training exercises like push-ups, squats, and lunges. Gradually increase intensity.]

[Recommended Dietary Plan: Consume a balanced diet with a good mix of proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and water. Avoid processed foods and excessive sugar.]

Michael was no stranger to exercise, but he'd never been consistent about it. And his diet? Well, it was the typical college student fare: instant noodles, fast food, and whatever was cheapest at the cafeteria.

"Guess it's time to make some changes," he said to himself, a sense of determination building within him. The prospect of improving his physical health to boost his mental capabilities was appealing.

Suddenly–the pocket of his slacks vibrated. Michael pulled his smartphone up and read the message. It was his workmate, Robin, in the Racks restaurant.

"Yow, when are you getting here? Your shift is almost starting!"

"Oh fuck..." Michael muttered and started running towards the exit. He had momentarily forgotten that he had part-time work scheduled for today. His mind had been so absorbed with the system and the challenges ahead that he lost track of time.

He dashed through the campus, weaving his way through groups of students leisurely making their way to their next classes.

Reaching the exit of the campus, he quickened his pace. The Racks restaurant was two trips from his school. One ride of jeepney to the Cubao Station where he takes the train, and then from Cubao to North Avenue Station, which is where one of the biggest malls in the Philippines, SM North Edsa is located. His shift will start in forty-five minutes. If he gets there by thirty-five, he'll make it in time.

***

Forty-two minutes later.

When he finally arrived at SM North Edsa, he broke into a brisk walk, weaving through the throngs of shoppers and mall-goers. The Racks restaurant was on the third floor, and he took the escalator two steps at a time, not wanting to waste a moment.

The familiar scent of grilled meats and spices hit him as he approached the restaurant. He made a beeline for the staff room, quickly changing into his uniform. His colleagues greeted him with nods and quick hellos as he clocked in, just three minutes before his shift started.

"Made it," he exhaled.

"Good thing you did," Robin said, who was picking up things inside his locker. "Because we have visitors for today."

"Visitors? You meant the Estolas?"

Estolas is the owner of this restaurant's franchise. They seldom visit the restaurants and when they do, it usually means a thorough inspection or big announcements. Michael knew he had to be on his best behavior.

Yeah, the Estolas," Robin confirmed, closing his locker. "Heard they might be introducing some new changes or something. So, better be sharp today."

Michael nodded, feeling the pressure. Working in one of their busiest outlets, he was used to a fast-paced environment, but the presence of the owners added an extra layer of stress.

As he stepped out into the restaurant, Michael scanned the area. It was already bustling with customers. He quickly tied on his apron, ready to dive into the hectic atmosphere.

Throughout his shift, Michael served customers, took orders, and helped in the kitchen when needed. When the customers were busy eating their meals, he entered the staffroom and browsed the internet for the book, "Fundamentals of Thermodynamics by Claus Borgnakke and Richard E Sonntag."

He believed that he may be able to read the book while resting or during his break times. To his surprise, Michael found a free PDF file of the book online. It was a stroke of luck. He quickly downloaded it to his phone, feeling a wave of relief. Having the book in a digital format meant he could study anywhere, anytime, fitting in precious study moments amidst his hectic schedule.

However–since the customers are busy, he might be able to read it now. But they might need anything so he had to read the digital book outside so when they called for assistance, he could reach out to them.

And then—he started reading through the book. Normally, reading a book is not effective for him because the words would just pass through his mind without really sinking in. But this time, he noticed something different. He could understand the graphs, the explanations, the mathematical equations, everything as if he knew what he was reading.

Wait—is this one of the powers of the system? As if to answer his question, the system interface popped up with a notification.

[Whenever you are reading or watching educational materials, the skill Attentiveness will activate, allowing you to digest and understand information more efficiently.]

Michael's eyes widened in realization. The System wasn't just a cheat for exams; it was actually helping him learn and understand better. This was a game-changer for him. He could now make the most out of his limited study time.

"You know, using your cell phone while at work is prohibited right?"

Michael looked up from his phone to see a woman standing in front of him, and it took him a second to take it all in. She had sleek black hair pulled back half up updos, showing off her face. She was dressed in a simple but elegant white blouse and black skirt combo that seemed tailor-made for her, and she had a kind of cool vibe that made her stand out. It was like she owned the place without even trying.

For a moment, Michael was just stuck there staring, but then he realized who she was—the boss's daughter Catherine, no less—and he knew he had to get his act together quick.

"Sorry ma'am, I didn't notice you entering," Michael said, more to himself than her as he quickly stuffed his phone away. He could feel his heart racing a bit. He wasn't used to messing up at work, especially not in front of someone like her.

"Maybe if you are not looking at your phone, you would notice me. It's good that I was the one who caught you and not my mother, otherwise you'd get fired," Catherine said bluntly.

"It will never happen again ma'am," Michael said sincerely with an apologetic eye.

She just looked at him dead in the eye.

The manager of the restaurant exited the staff room and quickly approached the two. "Miss Estolas, you are already here."

He then noticed the tension between the two.

"Did something happen?"

"I saw this gentleman using his phone while working, perhaps you can remind him that it's against the restaurant's policy," Catherine said coldly.

The manager's eyes widened, and he turned to Michael with disappointment. "I'll reprimand him Ms. Estolas. Can I get you something to drink?"

"Just give us a table," Catherine said, turning away with the manager following behind. The manager glanced over his shoulder and mouthed. "We'll speak later."

"Shit..." Michael cursed inwardly.
