CHAPTER 23—XAVIER POV

We'll take our separate paths here, Miss Davis.

Why did I say that?

I shouldn't have said that because she'll believe that.

I don't want to leave her.

"Sir." Leroy knocks on my door.

"Come in," I tell him.

"Miss Davis wants to meet you-regarding you pulling out of Atlec," he says.

"Set up a meeting whenever I'm free," I tell him.

"Are you sure?" Leroy asks me as my friend, not my assistant.

"What are you talking about, Leroy?" I huff, the irritation in my voice is evident.

"Come on, Xavier!" He throws his hands up. "I was literally in this office when you guys broke up!"

"Before I change my mind Amelia, get out," I said bluntly.

And she did.

Leaving me standing there.

"Boss what the hell did you do?" Leroy, who I forgot was standing there, shouted to me, his hands on his head in shock of what I did.

"She needs time, Leroy. Even if I keep her now, she'll hate it. Then, she'll hate me."

"You let her go?"

"Our story isn't over. I know it."

The memories hit me like truck, I had forgotten Leroy was there.

"Sir, you don't have to go," Leroy says. "In fact, I think it's better if you don't."

I shouldn't see her, but that didn't mean I wasn't going to.

"It's the last time I'm going to see her, Leroy. Don't worry," I calm him down, he was intruding but I knew he had the best intentions at heart.

"Fine. I'll set up a meeting-you have nothing for today is that cool?" he asks. I nod and he leaves my office.

The meeting was set for 2 hours later, which flew by faster than I expected.

"Mr King?" her soft voice calls my name as her head peeps around the door.

"Yes, come in, Miss Davis," I say, making my voice monotone and as stoic as possible.

She walks in and the open windows of my office perfectly blew wind sending her sweet scent to me. She smiled softly and took a seat opposite me.

"This Atlec deal..." I start before she even has the chance to make any small talk/ "I'm leaving it."

"I still don't understand why. They are a very promising company." She sighs.

"Why?" I grit my teeth, was she so painfully oblivious to her effect on me. "Because, quite frankly, I don't want to be around you, Miss Davis."

An obviously offended expression overcomes her, but her face relaxes. I don't think she was expecting any less.

"I understand that, but please don't harm your success because of me," she says.

"Miss Davis..." I say. "I'm dropping out, but I'll keep my investments in the company still, and you can control them. Don't try to change my mind."

"Very well." She sighs. "I don't lose anything anyway but at least take your money back I'll put the rest of it in myself."

"I don't think that will be necessary."

"Mr King." Her voice is lower, more dominant. "I don't need your favour."

"Think of it as a wedding present," I brush off.

Her face drops when I say wedding and her previously hard exterior calms down a little bit. "Speaking of wedding..."

She cautiously searches through her handbag, pulling out an off-white textured envelope out. "Here. I wanted to personally invite you to our wedding rather than have some random envelope show up in your mail."

"You already got a date?" I ask.

"Next Sunday. I know it's a little last minute, but I wanted it to be as soon as possible." She smiles endearingly.

"Why are you doing this?"

"If you don't want to come, you don't have to, but you asked for an invite so I—" she begins rambling.

"Why are you marrying him?" I clarify, as if she didn't understand already.

"Because I love him," she says and my chest stings.

"Liar," I snap back, but this time I don't even know if she's lying anymore.

"Excuse me?" Her eyebrows furrow.

"He's using you. Don't you understand? He wants a trophy wife. He just wants to accomplish you, not love you!" I say, but in a calm manner. If I show my anger, she'll only hold it against me.

"It may look that way from the outside, Mr King, but I know what type of relationship I have with him," she mutters and gets up and ready to leave.

Before she closes the door behind her she says one more thing.

"And who's to say I'm not using him for the same exact thing?" Her eyes have a playful

glint in them. "I hope I see you at the wedding, Mr King."

After she's gone, I open the envelope, sliding my fingers under the seal.

You are cordially invited to the beautiful ceremony of my wedding taking place on Sunday the 15th of November. Let us be blessed with your presence during this occasion. We request you to join us at the Borderline as Amelia Davis takes the hand of Alexander Chopra through marriage.

15th of November?

That's the same day we got married. She really does know how to hurt a man.

I fold the invitation and put it in my blazer pocket, still debating with myself whether or not I would be attending.

My mind wasn't usually like this normally I knew what to do straight away but with Amelia nothing was straightforward.

"Phew." Leroy jogs into my office. "She's gone. That chapter is done and dusted." He chuckles.

"Do you not like her?" I ask him, seeing his joy at her leaving.

"Of course not. She's my wife's best friend...but for you, sir...don't you think it's more pain that it's worth?" he asks.

"Yes. I suppose you're right about that, Leroy."
