Business Always
CHAPTER 28—AMELIA POV

It's been a few months since I moved to California-Los Angeles, specifically.

I stayed mostly to myself and focused purely on work and friends. Video calls with Jodie and Jasmine almost became a daily thing.

They both were a little hurt that I left so abruptly but understood that I needed a change and that a new environment would ultimately be better for me.

I'm sitting on the balcony of my small apartment. I's nothing more than average, but I'm not a fan of flashy houses anyway. I like soaking up the spring sun.

My phone rings, buzzing against the wooden counter of my kitchenette. Groaning, I get out of the sun's warmth and walk inside.

I feel a little better when I realia that it was Jodie who was calling.

"Hey," I answer, going back onto the balcony.

"Hey, you need to come to New York!" she says urgently.

"What? Why?" I say, more panicked than I expected to be.

"I don't know, but the Atlec called and said they need to see you urgently," she explains.

"Well, can he not come here?" I ask.

"No, I suggested that." Her eyes roll. "But he said he needs to show you."

I scoff. "Is it really that important?"

"Well, he won't shut up about it...he's been calling for the past couple of days."

"Fine," I give in.

"Fine what?" Jodie asks, a hopeful glint in her eyes.

"I'll come to New York for a few days."

She cheers and starts going on about all the things we'll do together.

"OK, OK," I calm her down but laugh. "I need to make flight arrangements. I'll see you soon." We say bye and end the call.

I call my pilot, wondering how quickly I can be in New York and to my surprise it was faster than I expected.

I just throw my cell phone, charger, and earphones in a small purse. Most of my stuff was still in my New York home. I still hadn't come round to moving it here.

In a way, I was quite glad to be called back to New York. I missed Jasmine and Jodie and being hooked up in my house was getting to me.

My fridge was empty, like usual, except a bowl of leftover spaghetti which I ended up eating so I don't have to throw it away.

After eating and cleaning up, it was time for me to get to my flight. I call n Buber and get to the airport in about 20 minutes.

"Miss Davis," the plane attendant greets me. I nod in return and sit down in my favourite seat on the plane.

The flight is just under 5 hours, and I land safely. The cooler New York air embraces me.

I walk down the steps of the plane to my driver waiting for me.

"Nice to see you again," he greets, opening the door for me. "Where to, Miss?"

"Take me to the Eva Enterprises building please," I say. Jodie didn't know what exact time I was going to arrive so I thought it would be nice to surprise her at work.

I walk up the stairs, the other employees greet me with surprised smiles which I return. I knock on Jodie's office door.

"Come in," she calls out. "Miss Davis isn't currently available so please leave a message with me and I will relay it to her," she says, head engrossed in a file.

"No, I actually had business with her assistant," I say, and her head shoots up.

"Amelia!" she gasps and runs up to me, pulling me into a hug.

"I missed you!" I hug her equally as tightly.

"OK, I'm gonna get your Atlec business sorted out so that we can hang out the rest of the day!" She hurries to the desk and calls.

After a quick but professional conversation, she comes back to me and basically pushes me out of her office, saying that Atlec is ready to meet now, and I should get going.

"I want to hear all about your California adventures later. Girls' night with Ja?" She raises an eyebrow.

"I'll pick you up after this meeting," I say, and she closes the door.

My driver is still outside, so I ask him to take me to the Atlec building. The drive is short, but I'm getting tired of sitting and travelling all day.

"Good afternoon, Miss Davis." Robin stands outside the building greets me, tapping his foot on the ground anxiously.

"What happened that you're harassing my assistant for the past few days?" I ask, annoyed.

"I needed to get in touch with you. I apologize for making you travel," he says and

starts walking inside, urging for me to follow him.

"Put these on." A member of staff hands me a pair of goggles.

"Um. What's going on?" I ask, hesitantly placing the goggles over my head.

"Just a precaution. Things have calmed down, but you never know when something might happen," Robin explains.

That calms me down a little. Besides if it were really that dangerous Robin wouldn't go in himself, let alone take me.

The double doors open after Robin puts a code. My jaw drops when I see the state of the room.

Top, state of the art technology and equipment was completely trashed beyond repair. Wires were pulled out, chemicals were spilt, and there's a slight burnt smell in the air. "What the hell happened here?"

"We're not sure. It's too much damage to be a lab mishap-so it's most likely a sabotage."

"A sabotage?" I raise my eyebrow.

"Well, nothing was stolen, so it's the only guess I could make." He rubs his temples in frustration.

"What would you like me to do about this?" I cross my hands over my chest impatiently.

"Well, I don't know but I need your advice." He sighs, defeated.

"Alright," I say, remembering when one of my own warehouses had been destroyed a few years ago. "First of all, get a hazard team and few cleaners to clear everything up."

"Right."

"This will hold back profit. Nothing you won't be able to recover from, but don't expect to make any big bucks until you recover."

"And the replacements?" he asks.

"Well, this company has made more money than I expected, so I don't mind investing more to replace equipment-we can meet later to discuss that."

"Thank you, Miss Davis." He shakes my hand, holding back a smile. I get out of the building and back into my car, answering my ringing phone.

"You're back?" Jasmine screams into the line.

"Yeah, had some business here," I reply calmly.

"Get to my house ASAP. Jodie's already here we need to talk," she orders.

"OK. I'm just going to grab some coffee for us, and then I'll be there," I say, motioning for my driver to stop outside Bean. It had been a while since I got a coffee from there.

I go inside, grabbing 2 lattes and a cappuccino for Jasmine. Whilst I'm waiting for the barista to prepare them a warm wet feeling presses against me back.

As I'm about to slide my card on the reader to pay the barista, I feel something warm drip down my back, making its way from my shoulders down to my lower back and dripping off of the edge of my blazer. My eyes widen, and my face blushes out of embarrassment. Every eye in the cafe is glued on me, and I'm frozen in my spot.

"I'm sorry about that!" a hurried voice rushes to apologize to me. I turn around to see who it is not necessarily angry but more curious.

"Xavier."
