Chapter 14:
He banged against the door, hitting it so hard that his wrists snapped, blood streaming down from his injuries and painting the door red.
Finally, with a loud crash, the door was forced open.
Rhys’ right arm dangled limply at his side, clearly broken.
Even though the pain made him break out in a cold sweat, he rushed inside without a second thought. When Rhys saw Harlee lying unconscious, he quickly lifted her up and staggered out of the morgue.
“Mmm…” In a daze, Harlee couldn’t distinguish between reality and a dream. She felt a slight sting on her lips, as if something soft and firm pressed against them, bringing in fresh air.
Her brain, starved of oxygen, instinctively told her to gulp it down.
As she reacted, the pressure on her lips let up a bit before it returned.
As Harlee’s awareness slowly returned, she felt warmth surrounding her and instinctively leaned toward it.
“What are you doing! You’ve already woken up. Stop pretending! I knew you were trying to hit on Rhys!” The sharp, shrill voice snapped Harlee wide awake.
She found herself tightly wrapped in Rhys’ arms, their lips touching, their eyes locked.
Above them was Lindsay’s furious face, twisted with rage.
Her eyes shot daggers, as if she wanted to tear Harlee apart.
“I bet she locked herself in there on purpose, acting like a victim to get your attention so she could move up in the world. Women like her are experts at this kind of thing. Rhys, don’t fall for her. You even gave her CPR! She’s a fraud, a fraud…”

“Shut up!” Rhys snapped at Lindsay.
He had let go of Harlee’s lips when she opened her eyes.
His voice was icy as he glared at Lindsay.
“I’ll get to the bottom of this incident. If you keep making noise, I’ll have someone throw you out.”
Lindsay flinched, biting her lip in frustration, her face turning shades of blue and red.
“Are you alright? Does anything feel off?” Rhys turned to Harlee and asked gently, his brow furrowed.
From Rhys’ usually calm eyes, Harlee noticed genuine concern. Remembering what had happened just before she fainted, she began to piece things together.
“I’m okay. Thank you,” she replied weakly, trying to get up and create some space between them. She wasn’t accustomed to being close to others, especially not pressed together like this.
Noticing her hesitation, Rhys hesitated before gradually letting her go.
But as Harlee stood up too fast, she wobbled and almost toppled over. Luckily, Rhys’ quick reflexes kept her from falling.
As they drew closer, Harlee felt him tense up instantly. That was when she noticed they were both covered in blood. Rhys’ hands were a gruesome mess, and his right arm hung at a strange angle.
“Are you still feeling unwell? I’ll take you upstairs to see a doctor right away.” While Harlee was lost in her thoughts, Rhys misinterpreted her silence and bent down to pick her up.
Harlee steadied herself and raised a hand to stop him.
“I’m fine. I think you’re the one who needs to see a doctor now.”
“It’s just a minor injury.” Rhys brushed it off, his focus still on Harlee.
