Chapter 17:

“Thank you,” Harlee said, her eyes growing cold as she smirked at the audacity of whoever dared to go after her.

Before Rhys could speak again, Harlee added, “Once the culprit is found, I’ll leave.”

Rhys nodded and fell silent, trying to push aside the sudden feeling of disappointment in his chest.

They arrived at Nathaniel’s ward.

Having just gone through a check-up, Nathaniel was resting with his eyes closed, watched over by a dedicated nurse.

“Grandpa,” Rhys called out gently.

Nathaniel opened his eyes, but instead of looking at Rhys, his gaze immediately settled on Harlee. She resembled Nicola so much.

“You’re Miss Sanderson, right? I was a bit out of it earlier. Please forgive me.”

“It’s nothing,” Harlee said, replaceing it hard to maintain her cold demeanor in front of Nathaniel’s warm presence.

“Are you feeling any better?”

“It’s alright. Just the same old issues.

After all, I am not getting any younger. I pulled through this time, but who knows when an episode like this will happen again.” Nathaniel sighed dramatically, casting a sidelong glance at Rhys.

Rhys’ lips twitched. It was the first time he had seen his grandfather use the sympathy card. Nathaniel had always endured pain in silence. Plus, after the surgery, Nathaniel was already looking much better.

As Nathaniel expressed his woes, Harlee was at a loss as to how to console him. She had never been good at dealing with elders. In the Gill family, she had always felt invisible. Liam and Averie had never shown her love, and other relatives ignored her.

“Miss Sanderson, don’t worry about me. Life and death are out of our hands. Overthinking doesn’t help. It’s just that…” Nathaniel let out a heavy sigh, shaking his head with a troubled look.

“I always wanted a daughter, but I only had a son and then just one grandson. It bothers me when I think about it.”

At this, Harlee was puzzled about how the conversation had taken this turn. Nathaniel looked at her with a wide smile, his face lighting up with joy.

“To be honest, I liked you the moment I saw you. You’re a good girl. If I had a granddaughter like you, I would have been more than content.”

“That’s too kind of you to say that, Mr. Green.” Harlee felt a little at a loss hearing Nathaniel’s words.

“Miss Sanderson, I mean every word.

Could you consider becoming part of the Green family? I really desire a lovely granddaughter like you. Your consent will cross that off my bucket list.” Finally, Nathaniel revealed his true intention.

Nathaniel’s eyes sparkled with expectation as he shot a look at Rhys, seemingly saying, “Rhys, don’t just stand there! Tell Miss Sanderson how delighted you’d be to have her join the Green family as a sisterly figure to you!”

“I don’t need a sisterly figure,” Rhys said flatly, surprising Nathaniel.

Nathaniel was taken aback, utterly shocked. What was Rhys playing at? Rhys was usually reserved and respectful and had never openly defied him like this. Rhys didn’t offer any explanation and merely glanced at Harlee with an intense, unreadable gaze.
