Chapter 25:
Lonnie chuckled and said, “That’s more like it.”
Due to Etta’s actions, Harlee was intentionally sidelined.
From the front, the three of them appeared to be a family, while Harlee, the biological daughter who had just returned, seemed like an outsider.
“I’ve always thought of you two as my parents,” Etta said with a happy laugh, turning to give Harlee a triumphant smile, her eyes shining with smugness.
Etta’s gaze seemed to say, “See? Even if you’re their biological daughter, so what? In this house, I’m the most important.”
Harlee paused in her tracks. Listening to Etta’s chatter, Lonnie and Skyla were momentarily distracted but still remembered their daughter who had just returned. They quickly noticed Harlee’s pause.
“What’s wrong, Harlee?” Skyla asked. She instinctively freed herself from Etta’s grip and hurried back to Harlee’s side. Lonnie also shifted his focus entirely to Harlee.
Seeing this, Etta bit her lower lip in frustration. Watching Etta’s expressions change, Harlee felt a sense of satisfaction. She gestured toward Etta and asked, “Who is she?”
Only when Harlee voiced her question did Lonnie and Skyla realize they had neglected to introduce Etta to Harlee, a careless oversight.
“Etta is Callie’s daughter.
Callie has served this household for the last thirty years. You will meet her soon,” Skyla explained.
“Callie is reliable and friendly. If you ever need anything, go straight to her.”
“I see,” Harlee said, a small smile forming on her face.

“So, she’s the daughter of the maid.”
The moment those words left her lips, Etta’s smile turned stiff.
Harlee’s remark had struck a nerve.
Harlee found Etta’s earlier arrogance amusing.
Despite being the daughter of a maid, Etta had the nerve to challenge her as soon as she walked in.
For a moment, she had assumed Etta was her younger sister.
How hilarious.
While Harlee’s comment made Etta seethe with anger, her parents didn’t think it was out of line. Skyla said, “Etta grew up in this household while Callie worked diligently, so we’re quite close to her.” As she spoke, her eyes reddened, as if she wanted to say more but couldn’t bring herself to.
Lonnie softly patted Skyla on the back. The anxiety they had felt upon learning of Harlee’s disappearance at that time was overwhelming, and whenever her vanishing crossed their minds, a wave of sadness and concern hit them.
Etta, who was around Harlee’s age, reminded them of their missing child, making them more attentive to her.
“I see,” Harlee said with a nod.
“Let’s eat. I’m hungry.” Harlee was starving, as she hadn’t had a proper meal all day.
Before moving out from the Gill family, she hadn’t eaten well.
After that, she stayed in the hospital for a couple of hours, followed by bungee jumping with Rhys.
