Chapter 42:

“Who is he?” Rhys asked calmly as he walked toward Harlee.

The manager called over an assistant, his frown deepening.

“It’s Mayer Reed.”

Mayer was a well-known name in Rockyland’s racing scene. Lately, rumors circulated that Mayer planned to break into the Multitopia market.

However, he hadn’t expected Rhys to make a move in Baythorn first. It was clear that Mayer had come to issue a challenge.

Having unwittingly allowed Mayer, who clearly came to issue a challenge rather than compete for sportsmanship, onto the racetrack was a serious oversight. The manager quickly sought to remedy the situation.

“Shall I escort him out?” he inquired.

Rhys, eyeing Mayer’s smug face, responded with calmness, “No need.”

The manager exhaled a sigh of relief, reassured by Rhys’ composed demeanor. With Rhys, a skilled racer under the cover of the racetrack’s mysterious owner, not even a racer of international acclaim could disrupt the peace. Mayer might want to make a scene, but his glee was bound to be short-lived.

On the field, Mayer’s derogatory comments about Multitopia had ignited a firestorm among the crowd. Unity formed from shared outrage as the murmurs grew louder.

“Why is this rude guy trying to undermine our country?”

“He’s just won a single race and is strutting around like he is the best in the world?”

“Just kick him out!”

An unmistakable sense of dissatisfaction radiated from the crowd.

Unfazed, Mayer smirked, venom in his tone.

“What? Did I say something wrong? Aren’t you all just nebbish? Observe that ugly woman. Why would she pledge her affection to me instead of any of you, if not for my superior grace?”

His taunt swung the crowd’s attention to Adelina, their eyes embedding her with shame.

All Adelina wanted was to melt into the ground.

What an embarrassment! How had she become the target of everyone’s scorn? She dreaded to imagine the disastrous repercussions after today’s event. The Gill family would likely be dragged through the mud, synonymous with disgrace among the town’s elite.

Her heart sank, her unease palpable.

“Still staring? What a pathetic sight you all are!” Mayer mocked, his scorn slicing through the charged atmosphere.

“If you really have the skills, then beat me.”

This declaration stirred the crowd, causing a restless murmur to ripple through them.

“Time for a showdown! I can’t accept being outdone by that upstart.”

“That guy’s gotten too big for his boots with just one victory. We’ll wipe that smirk off his face soon enough!”

While many were eager to challenge Mayer, seeing his prowess on the track made them think twice.

Could they realistically expect to triumph where seasoned professionals had failed? Nevertheless, they refused to back down just yet, searching for the racetrack manager and hoping he could bring out some remarkable racers for another round of competition.
