Chapter 56:

Mayer met Harlee’s gaze unflinchingly, a smirk playing on his lips as he pressed a button. The drill attached to his car whirred to life, its speed escalating with a menacing hum.

The Phantom Racer’s exterior groaned under the strain, the air alive with the sinister symphony of its armor crumpling.

Onlookers shouted in protest, their voices a storm of anger and disbelief, but their cries could not alter the stark reality unfolding before them.

As the drill edged closer, piercing the air with its threat, some of the more sensitive onlookers turned their heads, their hands flying up to shield their eyes from the impending dreadful sight.

Rhys’ hands curled into tight fists, the skin over his knuckles stretching pale as a surge of stormy wrath and deadly intent toward Mayer burned in his eyes.

The very air around seemed to thicken with the imminent threat of an explosion, holding everyone in tense suspense.

The tension was knife-edge sharp, yet Harlee remained unaffected, her demeanor cool.

A slow, pleased smirk unfurled across her crimson-stained lips.

She was clearly entertained by the unfolding drama.

With a dancer’s grace, Harlee reached for the steering wheel, her fingers delicate against the dark leather.

Her other hand snapped to the brake lever, pulling it with a decisive jerk.

The car’s rear tires howled against the asphalt, a grating, screeching protest that cut through the heavy air.

Under the wide-eyed stares of the onlookers, the Phantom Racer screeched to a sudden, dramatic stop.

Using the momentary pause, Harlee maneuvered the car with the precision of a seasoned racer, catapulting it forward and out of harm’s way like a sleek arrow swiftly shot from a bow.

The entire sequence unfolded in a breath-stealing three seconds.

By the time Mayer comprehended the escape, the Phantom Racer had already put a considerable distance between his car and itself, leaving him floundering in its wake.

Adelina, caught in the aftermath and unable to adjust her speed in time, found herself trapped in the spot just vacated by the Phantom Racer.

Adelina’s car, built from a thinner, flimsier material, groaned under the pressure as the drill punctured a jagged, gaping hole through its side, a stark contrast to the Phantom Racer’s impenetrable frame.

“Please, no! Somebody, help me!” Adelina’s cries for help were shrill with panic, her face ashen as she fumbled helplessly with the steering wheel, finally shrinking back into her seat, her voice welling with raw fear.

And yet, amidst the unfolding chaos, no one spared a glance her way, their focus riveted elsewhere.

For a long, silent minute, the air was thick with anticipation, and then suddenly erupted into a roar of cheers louder than ever before, reverberating across the vast expanse of the sky.

Mayer turned away from Adelina, his attention riveted on the sleek black car in the distance.

With a fierce twist of the ignition, he gunned the engine, the car roaring to life as he darted after his quarry.

Rhys felt the knot of tension in his throat ease as his balled fists slowly unfurled.

He dropped his gaze, a self-deprecating grin tugging at the corners of his mouth.
