Chapter 87:

With poised steps, Liliana approached Harlee and greeted her with a sugary tone.

“Harlee.”

Skyla’s expression remained frosty as she interjected sharply, “Save it. Our dear Harlee has no ties to you all and will not accept your gifts.”

Liliana recoiled as though struck, tears cascading onto her palms.

“Skyla, do you still hold a grudge? When I pinched Harlee, I was just a child who didn’t know any better.” Her voice quivered, laden with the weight of unspoken sorrow.

Valentina was quick to defend Liliana, her words tinged with regret.

“After all these years, can’t we move past this? Yes, I was overprotective of Liliana, enough to push Harlee into the pond, but as a mother, my instincts were to shield her from harm.”

It was evident that Valentina and Liliana had an ulterior motive for this visit, which involved more than just mending old wounds.

After years of silence, they had chosen this very moment to come forth, their intentions less than pure.

Skyla’s scoff was bitter as she retorted, “So only your Liliana was a child, and my Harlee wasn’t? Please, don’t degrade the sacred title of ‘mother.’ You’re not worthy!”

Liliana cast her gaze downward, her voice tinged with sorrow.

“If it helps to cool your anger, then let Harlee strike me. Just please, don’t hold the Juarez family in contempt. I’d do anything for peace.”

“No! You shouldn’t be caught up in the disputes of adults,” Valentina protested as she stepped in front of Liliana, shielding her.

“If Harlee needs to release her anger, let her take it out on me. It was I who caused her fall into the pond, even if Elvin’s mother insisted I was justified.”

Skyla let out a derisive snort.

“Justified? Then why are you here apologizing? Is this just for show?”

The mention of the “Juarez family” triggered a flash of realization in Skyla.

Back when she clashed with Valentina, the Juarez family had not only withheld their support but had also rebuked her for stirring conflicts, threatening to disown her if she persisted. Now, with the Sanderson family business flourishing, the Juarez’s envy had spiked, longing for Skyla to bridge them with the Sanderson family.

But Skyla had already cut ties with the Juarez family, closing off their avenue to the Sanderson family’s support. Valentina, confronted with her own setback, shifted her focus to Harlee, observing Harlee’s quiet and seemingly naive presence, mistakenly thinking she could be easily swayed.

Valentina said, her voice carrying a conciliatory tone, “Harlee, Liliana has owned up to her mistake. Surely, you aren’t still upset over childhood squabbles, right? We’re all family here, and it’s normal for kids to have little squabbles, isn’t it?”

Beside Skyla, Harlee let out a smirk.

“Sure, they were just childhood squabbles,” she replied, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

“But I’m known to hold a grudge. Maybe if I smacked you once, I’d get over it.”

Valentina’s and Liliana’s expressions soured instantly.

Holding her irritation in check, Valentina countered, “You’re not a child anymore, and neither is your strength, right?”
