Chapter 59 053 Brain Worm
Now, the governmental buildings of the Iridium Star United Empire may not even be as large as the annex of a C country's county government. The Iridium Star population is small, the degree of automation and intelligence is high, and furthermore, Iridium Star people pursue efficiency, considering excessive architectural space to be wasteful.
The situation at the Empire's Scientific Research Institute is the same; formerly the Fleet's scientific research institution, it actually only has four laboratories. Although the number of laboratories is small, the level of the scientific researchers is not low.
The Fleet's Scientific Research Institute requires heavyweights capable of independently handling tasks in the original Empire Scientific Research Institute, coupled with efficient scientific researchers who have a deep understanding of multiple fields.
Only in this way can they be capable of conducting scientific research and resolving issues when the exploration fleet encounters any unexpected situations.
The Dean of the Institute, Mo Laitong, is a master in Empire cosmic physics and is exceptionally knowledgeable. His female disciple, Linyin, has obtained multiple doctoral degrees in various fields and is a genius at the Scientific Research Institute.
Linyin was the one experimenting on these bizarre alien parasitic creatures. At this moment, her golden hair was pinned up, and she was wearing protective goggles from the lab: her graceful, exquisite figure was clad in a one-piece protective suit, over which she had donned a lab coat.
Obviously, if she were only to wear the snug one-piece suit, her figure would have been distractingly suggestive, so she also had no choice but to wear a white coat which didn't serve much purpose.
Linyin was now wearing an expression full of the delight of discovery, which, along with her enchantingly beautiful face, was incredibly charming. Bai Zhongqi had seen Linyin once before, and seeing her again, his heart couldn't help but race.
Whether it was Xu Lanzhou or Linyin in the fleet, both women were exceptionally beautiful, distinct from the popular, surgically altered faces of the time, each with their own unique beauty which naturally drew appreciation. Of course, the Chancellor himself had someone he cherished, and with more important matters at hand, he wouldn't keep staring at someone.
Linyin greeted Bai Zhongqi, her excitement impossible to hide. "Your Majesty," she said at a rapid pace, "this is a type of intelligent lifeform we've discovered for the first time, and it possesses the highest level of intelligence among all parasitic creatures we have discovered to date.
We have already extracted the genes of this creature for research and have obtained some very unexpected but particularly interesting results. The level of intelligence of this parasitic lifeform may be even higher than that of humans from Earth.
Its biological structure is also very unique; externally, it resembles an arthropod, but internally, it has almost no organs, instead it has filler organs that perform both muscle and brain functions. Simply put, everything inside its exoskeleton is brain tissue, and this brain also has the characteristics of muscle.
"It apparently gets its nutrients through the bloodstream of its host. This creature has an organ similar to a placenta that can exchange nutrients directly with human blood without causing direct blood exchange. Its appendages can directly control the human body's nerve center, thus allowing it to replace the brain in controlling the body.
We are not yet very clear on how it enters the human body, but it is presumed that it enters during its larval stage and infiltrates the cranial cavity. The larvae will release a paralytic toxin while the human is sleeping, completely paralyzing the human body, and then it will eat the entire human brain and transform it into its own essential organs.
Moreover, we speculate that the most amazing part is that by consuming the human brain, it can acquire various neurotransmitters and chemical signals, which means it will also take over human memories. Through this process, the parasite replaces the human brain completely and becomes a true human from a societal standpoint."
Bai Zhongqi and Xu Lanzhou both felt a chill down their spines upon hearing this, especially Bai Zhongqi, who could not imagine such a terrifying parasitic creature existing on Earth. It wasn't just a simple parasite causing disease in the human body; it actually ate the human brain and replaced people in their social lives.
Imagine a wife's bedfellow, who had sworn loyalty to her just the day before, could today become a monster wearing a human skin.
This monster would still go to work and support the family as usual, even telling his wife he loved her, and engaging in procreation; a politician who could affect thousands or millions of people, despite being a liar before, now, after being replaced by a parasitic entity, even the basic assurance of letting humanity live in peace no longer existed.
Linyin continued, "We had previously captured some very strange radio waves on Earth that didn't match any of the artificial signals currently used, but these waves were definitely patterned. When studying this parasitic creature, we discovered it was emitting the radio waves that we didn't understand before.
These radio waves are a type of shortwave with very limited propagation distance, so they presumably cannot travel back to Earth from space. However, these waves can use the parasitic creatures as relays to transmit to farther places.
We have reason to suspect that these parasitic creatures can form an information transmission network, which means they might possess a certain level of social organization, greatly increasing the threat these creatures could pose to Earth or other planets."
Bai Zhongqi's brow furrowed deeply; the unexpected emergence of this parasitic creature was proving to be a thorny issue. This creature wasn't a native species of Earth, which meant it came from beyond, making him wonder what other alien species might be lurking on Earth and to what extent they had impacted Earth and humanity.
This parasitic monster was delivered by the people from the United States; whether there was infiltration within the U.S. government, and how deep it might go. The extent to which these parasites had gained control over human societal and political power was, to Bai Zhongqi, an extremely serious problem.
"Has the content of their radio communication been deciphered?"
Linyin pursed her lips, looking helpless as she said, "To decode it, we need a large enough body of text and their substantive actions. Relying on just this one worm, we won't get much."
Bai Zhongqi nodded and said, "Then, for now, we should do our best to ascertain just how much this thing has hidden itself on Earth. Doctor Linyin, I need the Scientific Research Institute to immediately develop a portable and effective detection tool that can identify who has been parasitized." Stay tuned for updates on empire
Linyin confidently smiled and said, "Rest assured, Your Majesty, I'm already working on it. However, the detection tools we have developed so far can only detect within a relatively close range and cannot perform large-area detection. But if we can obtain more experimental samples for in-depth study, we should be able to replace a more effective means of discovering and dealing with them."
Bai Zhongqi nodded in satisfaction.
At that moment, Linyin's face took on a pleading look, and due to her lovely features, it was quite alluring as she said, "Your Majesty, this is a new species, could you let me name it?"
Xu Lanzhou couldn't help but frown; this scientific genius had an unusual penchant for naming, and her choices were not always good. She had wanted to name this universe the Second Universe before and now she seemed keen on seizing naming rights again.
"Linyin, such matters are naturally for the Chancellor to decide. Do not be presumptuous."
Linyin blinked her big, watery, sparkling eyes just so at Bai Zhongqi, which even he found a bit much to handle, and he quickly waved his hand saying, "It's fine, it's just a name. Let Doctor Linyin decide."
Overjoyed, Linyin almost jumped up, exclaiming, "Brain Worm! We'll call it the Brain Worm. It eats the brain, and its body is all brain and it's an arthropod, so Brain Worm is the most fitting name!"
