“Yeah.”

Why would I lie about that? I nodded fervently and recounted what happened today to my dad.

“I met drunk guys on my way to the market.”

“Yes, and then?”

“But those uncles suddenly asked me to give my sword away. So I just ran away. But all of a sudden, the light just burst out of the sword….”

“And then?”

“The sword flew into my hand and told me I was stupid.”

“.....?”

My dad looked at me in disbelief.

Well, I could understand him. It must be difficult to believe that the legendary Ego Sword said, "You fool!" as his first words.

But I wasn’t lying! It really screamed, ‘Hold it properly, you fool!’ to me.

I beat my chest multiple times to release my anger. Meanwhile, my dad tried to soothe me by saying that he believed in me.

“By the way, Dad. Can you hear it talking?”

“No, I can’t hear it. Normally, an Ego Sword can only speak to its own master.”

“Really? But that brat earlier….No, His Highness can communicate with it as well. Does that mean I’m not its master?”

“Did the sword say that you’re not its master?”

“No, he did say that.”

“Then, you are its master, Eve. Very well, my daughter. You must be a swordsmanship genius. You have awakened the Ego Sword this early. Chu, chu, chu~”

My dad shoved his rough, bearded face toward me and kissed me on the cheek.

I accepted my dad’s kisses and pushed him away with both hands when I felt like it went too far.

“My gosh, old man. Go away.”

Wiping my damp cheek with my sleeve, I asked him again.

“By the way, Dad. Have you always known that the sword is an Ego Sword?”

“Mmh…I’m not sure.”

“What kind of answer is that, Dad!?”

My dad smiled and gently pinched my cheek before letting go.

“Your sword was made by melting the sword that your mother brought.”

I just blinked blankly hearing my dad.

“What? Are you serious? This is my first time hearing that, though?”

“Of course, because I didn’t tell you about it. I have work to do now~ I need to repair the farm equipment in the village chief’s house.”

“W-Where are you going?! Finish your story!”

“Alright, sweetie. Be a good girl, okay~?”

In the end, my dad didn’t tell me about the sword, but he just whistled a tune as he walked away.

I could only stare vacantly at my dad’s retreating back and quickly ran to pick up Excalibur.

If Dad won’t tell me, I can ask the sword myself!

The sword must know better.

‘...But what should I call it?’

As I faced the sword, I thought for a moment what to call the sword so it would answer.

But right when I was thinking about it.

[Give me a name!]

“Woah, that scared me!”

[What are you scared of? You look stupid spacing out like that for a while. Forget it, just name this body. That way, you won’t have a reason to space off like a fool.]

Buzz, buzz.

The sword vibrated in my hand and went on rambling. Staring at the sword that shone as it vibrated, I asked.

“Name? Do you want a name?”

[Yeah! The master is supposed to name the sword!]

“But I have been calling you Excalibur.”

[Excalibur? I like it.]

“But since it’s too long, I’ll just call you Ex.”

[What? Where in the world would you cut someone’s name down like that?]

“We do that here. More importantly, I have a question, Ex.”

[....What is it? Say it.]

“You….are an Ego Sword, right? You can talk, and you have a consciousness.”

[Do you really need to ask that? As expected, human kids are stupid.]

“So, I’m your master?”

[....I don’t want to admit it, but yeah.]

“Why?”

I rested the sword that didn’t stop vibrating on the side and asked.

Why am I your master?

Ego Sword is a sword that chose its owner and resonated with them. If it didn’t like its owner, it could just go into another long sleep and wake up when it fell into someone else’s hands.

I recalled what my dad said about the Ego Sword a long time ago as I observed the sword.

[I didn’t know, either.]

“If you don’t know, who does?”

[Seriously! This mannerless kid! Try to behave! Do you know how old I am?]

“Alright, Grandpa. If Grandpa doesn’t know, then who does?”

[Whoa…this mannerless brat….]

“Damnit, so noisy! Just answer me! If you don’t answer, stay here. I’ll go out and play.”

I got up on my feet, and the sword really thought I was going to leave him alone, so he began to vibrate so loudly.

[That…hey! Sit down, sit back down! Brat! Or take me with you! I’m not heavy.]

“I’m not a brat. Call me Eve, okay?”

[Alright, Eve. Sit down, sit down.]

I sat coyly on the sofa, pretending that I couldn’t win against him, and grabbed the sword.

“Then answer my other question. I heard my dad melted another sword and made you, is that true?”

[True! I was originally a great holy sword with a huge blade that even a grown-up man could barely hold! I can’t believe that I am stuck in this kiddie-sized blade and become a kid’s sword….it is really a shame….]

“Didn’t I tell you to call me Eve?”

[...I can’t believe I became Eve’s sword.]

Listening to Ex’s rambling, I looked closely at the sword.

He was certainly smaller than a sword for an adult man, but it was by no means a small size. It was as tall as my chest when I hugged it close.

Still, I could swing a sword the size of my body effortlessly because Ex was a holy sword that adjusted its weight to the strength of the wielder…

[You’re wrong, fool!]

“Isn’t that it?”

[You’re wrong! Only you can lift me because you’re my master. My weight doesn’t change by a single gram! But how dare you make a rumor that my great body cannot even slice a single potato, huh?!]

The sword kept vibrating as if he was fuming. I patted the blade to soothe Ex.

“Alright, alright. Hmm? Sorry. I had a good reason for that.”

[It was unacceptable under any circumstances!]

“So what if you can’t accept it? I’m your master.”

[...That…]

[Oh, god. Let’s not fight, okay? We have to be close. After all, we’ll be together for a long time.”

The sword was quiet for a while before a light burst forth as if it agreed with me.

I was in a good mood after naming the sword Ex and getting a hold of the sweet golden thread called the Prince.

“Is this Mr. Nial Royce’s house?”

“...Well, I don’t use that name anymore, but come on in first. Please come in. Haha.”

“What? Why are there so many customers today?”

I watched the customers in disdain and mumbled to myself.

I was sure that they were the warriors by just looking at their useless capes and shiny swords attached to their waists.

‘This is driving me crazy. Is there a rumor among the warriors? Maybe my dad’s sword is just that amazing!’

My dad sat the customers at the dining table. My house was small and old, so there was no place for guest reception. So he had to sit at the dining table to talk to the guests.
