Chapter 281: Ch.280 Mechs in Action

Cable fired a shot, sending a German mech soldier tumbling down the stairs. The half-human, half-machine soldier crashed against countless steel beams and cables, sparks flying in all directions, until it finally smashed into pieces on the ground below. Cable pulled out a battery to recharge his weapon.

He, too, was half-human, half-machine, and a mutant, but the things in front of him seemed... different. It was as if history had been altered.

This wasn't the first time he had fought against World War II-era German soldiers, but the enemy wasn't supposed to be like this.

He shook his head, reminding himself he was still in the middle of a fight—this wasn't the time to get lost in thought. He'd talk to Deathstroke after the battle.

Shatterstar was standing next to him, holding twin blades, waiting. But Cable didn't let the enemy get close enough for hand-to-hand combat.

If the enemy actually reached them, how many could Shatterstar take down with just two swords?

Shatterstar wasn't Deadpool. While his martial arts skills were formidable, he didn't have a healing factor, and his weapons were just standard alloy.

If only he had some mystical weaponry to match his swordsmanship. That would be ideal.

Just then, Cable spotted a manhole cover flying high from the German ranks below. A red, white, and blue figure emerged from the underground, swinging a star-spangled round shield. Several German soldiers' heads rolled off with a single sweep of the shield.

"You've got to be kidding! Is Captain America really that strong?" Wild Child, a shapeshifting mutant, gasped in awe. It was his first time seeing Captain America decapitate people with a shield.

In his mind, Captain America had always been disciplined and restrained. Was this what a warrior on the battlefield was truly like?

Terrifying. So brutal and bloody. But, well, that's the only way to defeat the Nazis, right?

In truth, Su Ming didn't intend to be so ruthless. The real issue was that Stranglehold, freshly named, was a little too excited. Its strength surged unexpectedly, and thus...

"Tone down the strength—we still need to lure Zemo out," Su Ming mentally communicated with the symbiote, while using his shield to knock a few enemies aside.

The red, white, and blue shield flew through the air, crashing into several more enemies before being pulled back by a nearly invisible black thread. It returned neatly to Su Ming's hand.

Blocking a few bullets with the shield, Su Ming then charged toward the German soldiers who had been shooting at him, landing blows with his fists. Then, he set his sights on a nearby bipedal mech, ready to take it on.

Shields were terribly inconvenient. If you were going to use melee weapons on a battlefield, longer reach was always better. A shield was fine as a defensive tool, but you needed an actual weapon in your main hand.

Right now, he was masquerading as Captain America, so he couldn't exactly whip out any other weapons and go on a rampage. The mimicry had to be convincing if he was going to fool Zemo. But maybe he could steal a weapon from the enemy.

And as for the strongest weapon on this plaza, it had to be the massive bipedal mech.

Sure, the flying saucers in the sky were impressive, but they were out of reach unless they flew lower.

If the enemy had such great weapons, why not borrow one? As long as Su Ming didn't display superhuman physical abilities, using an external weapon would surely fool Zemo.

With that in mind, he slowed his steps deliberately.

The giant mech in front of him raised one of its legs, illuminated by the surrounding firelight, and kicked toward Su Ming.

"So, it's not just stomping. It can kick, too? The Germans really know how to build some impressive suspension systems."

Su Ming mused as he nimbly dodged the kick. Meanwhile, all the small-caliber weapons around him continued firing at him, forcing him to keep up appearances by swinging his shield.

Rolling, jumping, rolling again—he began to climb.

After a series of gymnastic maneuvers, Su Ming found himself under the mech's other leg, climbing up as if it were a tree.

"These legs even have electrical shock capabilities. The designer must've had a lot of ideas."

But the electrical current only caused Su Ming mild numbness, hardly a hindrance.

Like a monkey, he quickly climbed up, hugging the mech's thick metal leg. Raising the shield, he hacked at the bottom of the cockpit several times.

Sparks flew, and a square piece of metal fell away. Su Ming grabbed hold of the hole and flipped himself into the cockpit.

The interior was bathed in a pulsing blue glow. At the center of the equipment was an energy core roughly the size of a lunchbox, connected to countless gray wires that powered the entire mech.

This was a Tesseract engine.

Not that it mattered. Even if Su Ming brought the whole system back to the U.S., the "cursed" scientists at Wilson Enterprises wouldn't be able to replicate it. The Germans' tech tree had branched off into some completely unknown direction.

Even if he could bring this thing back intact, his team wouldn't be able to figure out anything useful from it.

Inside the cockpit, the crew stared dumbfounded at the "Captain America" who had just broken through their impenetrable defense.

Su Ming stared back at them, observing their posture and arm movements, analyzing how they operated this unique war machine.

"Fire! Quickly, fire!"

The commander grabbed a submachine gun beside him, and the other crew members snapped out of their daze, preparing to fight Captain America.

But all they heard was a cold chuckle. Without moving his lips, Su Ming spoke in English.

"Strangle them."

Immediately, black tendrils shot out from the star on "Captain America's" chest, wrapping around the crew's necks like living snakes and tightening instantly.

The commander tried to pull the trigger, but found he had no strength left. He could feel his eyeballs bulging out of their sockets, dropping onto his tongue, which had lolled out of his mouth.

Then, a mouth full of sharp teeth appeared on the tendril around his neck, hovering in front of him like a serpent. In his final moment, the commander smelled nothing but blood as the tendril's maw swallowed his head whole.

Stranglehold was satisfied, retracting back into Su Ming's chest after biting into each corpse. Since no one could see him inside the cockpit, Su Ming didn't hesitate to unleash the symbiote's lethal power.

Avoiding the engine, Su Ming shoved the headless commander's body aside and took his place in the commander's seat. Pulling the optical visor over his eyes, he noted how advanced the system was.

Not only could he see a full 360-degree view around the mech, but there were also dedicated cameras to monitor the ground and sky.

Unlike conventional tanks, this mech didn't require loading for its main cannon, which drew directly from the battery. Its other weapons had a vast ammunition supply.

Thanks to the modified interior layout, there was extra room for thicker armor and more auxiliary equipment, since they didn't need to store conventional shells for the main gun.

The commander's control panel alone had radar and various control buttons. Su Ming extended numerous tendrils from Stranglehold to take over the duties of the rest of the crew.

It didn't matter if he had never driven a mech before—he had already observed enough of their movements to make an educated guess. A few steps, and his brain would quickly grasp the controls and master them.

"Hmm, this should be the throttle."

Beside the commander's seat was a lever, conveniently placed, with its handle worn smooth from frequent use.

Su Ming grabbed the lever and pushed it forward. A powerful vibration shook the mech as it began charging across the plaza.
