Secret Scion -
Chapter 100 -
Asher remained in the hotel and rarely went out during the day. He had Hunter handle basically everything in Rollinsford and seldom stepped in even if a second or third rate family took the initiative to get close.
The reason he did this was because he wanted to spend more time to grasp the inner workings of the Metamorphosis technique. He also wanted to support Hunter by establishing his status within the upper-class circle of Rollinsford for him to smoothly assume the position as the Hoffman family head.
Hunter was a smart man. He knew Asher's intentions of helping him and was eternally grateful. When he learned that Asher was to leave, he invited him to a meal that evening.
They had not partaken in too much alcohol, but the two chatted all the way into the night. Hunter spoke of how the people of Rollinsford were talking behind his back, saying that he was a dog Asher had raised. If the dog, however, was more formidable than those of the upper class, he was not against it.
Asher just smiled faintly. Hunter and Castor were different in that regard. The former was someone who had suffered pain and humiliation from childhood. After so many years, his inner strength was by no means comparable to that of ordinary people. He did not care about his reputation. If he wanted something, he would do it at all costs. This kind of person was more convenient and worry-free to use. This was why Asher relied on Hunter.
He could rest assured with Rollinsford in Hunter's hands.
It was autumn and the air was cool with September coming to a close in Capital City. There were few such cool days in a year, and shopping had become a necessity for women every day.
Layla was dressed in a beige chiffon shirt with a simple lapel. It was stylish but also exuded a sexy and charming temperament. She was also in a black skirt with her slender legs clad in stockings. Her tall and seductive body really attracted everyone's attention.
Layla checked the time after leaving the mall, then said to a girl next to her, "Amber, that guy should be back soon. Let's go pick him up."
The one by Layla's side was Amber, who was clad in a tank top and denim jeans. She was obviously the far more youthful of the two.
"I remember how you and Asher used to fight every time you met or outright ignore each other. However, the relationship between the two of you seemed to have improved. You definitely wouldn't have picked him up if it were in the past," Amber said.
Hearing this, Layla also could not help but be taken aback. Her relationship with Asher had changed for the better?
What kind of joke was that? There was no way that was a thing.
"He's our grandfather's favorite child. How can I ever defy Grandpa's orders when he told me to go pick Asher up?" Layla slid into the car and said while putting on her seat belt. "There's no way my relationship with that guy would ever be good."
When she thought about how Asher had tossed her shoes onto the roof the last time he was back, she grew angry. She had to replace a chance to teach that brat a lesson. Otherwise, he would forget that she was his cousin.
"I'm feeling spicy cheese fondue today. Should we go grab a bite once Asher gets here?" Amber asked with a ravenous look.
Layla laughed. "We can get whatever you like. I just don't know if you like anything spicy." "I like spicy food best."
"That's good. "A sly smile flashed across Layla's face. "We should go to Wyvern's Sanctum. I hear their catchphrase is that 'we can only go up from here'."
"That's perfect," Amber spoke with glee. She, however, soon knitted her brows together. "But Ash doesn't seem to like spicy food very much."
"Who cares what he thinks? It's perfect as long as we're both happy."
Wyvern's Sanctum was a restaurant famous in Alexandrius. There was always a line right outside but that was only limited to the general public.
An hour later, they were all crammed into a booth in Wyvern's Sanctum.
"The dishes here are very spicy, Ash. You should be prepared." Amber reminded Asher as she ordered her favorites.
"It's fine," Asher replied.
However, he soon discovered that he overestimated his ability to tolerate spicy food. He had barely eaten ten mouthfuls before he tapped out. The spice levels were simply abnormal and unacceptable. His stomach felt as though it were on fire even if he only had very little food. Even the beer could not douse the flames in his gut.
When Amber finished eating, the trio left the booth. Asher was hungry and was planning to eat something else when the door to the opposite booth suddenly opened with great force. A young girl fell at their feet afterward.
"Mikaela, get your ass back to Rollinsford now! If you keep harassing me, I'll make sure you stay in Capital City for the rest of your life!" The young man inside sounded very familiar. Asher took a peek, and just as he expected, it was Garrett with a few young men and women by his side. That was when Garrett noticed Asher. It was as the saying goes; when enemies come face to face, their eyes would blaze with hatred. Garrett's eyes were bursting with anger at the moment. "Are you all right?" Amber did not know who Mikaela was. All she felt for her was pity as she hurriedly helped her to her feet.
"Asher?" Mikaela was shocked by Asher's appearance and pushed Amber away. She wiped away the tears beading in the corners of her eyes and hurried out.
"You know her, Ash?" Amber asked.
Asher nodded. "Let's go."
Amber had evening classes. They exchanged their goodbyes after leaving the restaurant. She then got in a car and left.
Asher had just drunk. Moreover, he had just driven up from Rollinsford which was why he had no intentions of driving. He got into Layla's vehicle instead.
As soon as he got into the car, Layla spoke, "That girl came from Rollinsford to look for Garrett. It seems that this guy hasn't changed one bit. He must've harmed quite a few girls back in Rollinsford."
In all honesty, Asher was surprised to see Mikaela here. He knew that Garrett had raped her, but she could not have come here just for that. Mikaela should be resentful of him. There was simply no way she would be here for him.
There must be some hidden agenda as to why she was here.
Asher simply said, "Mikaela is a girl from the Leonard household. She may be young, but she's quite the vicious one. This is karma, I suppose."
"Hmph! It doesn't absolve the man of his responsibility. What's the difference between you and Garrett?" Layla glanced at Asher and muttered, clearly displeased.
"How would you know what kind of man I am?"
"Hmph! First, you asked for Rose Schmidt's hand before you ended up getting betrothed to Phoebe. After that, you got married to Noelle. Tsk, I think you're even more of a jerk compared to Garrett!"
Asher remained indifferent. She would not be Layla if she did not try to stab him with her words. "I'm hungry. Let's replace a place to eat." Asher changed the subject.
Honestly speaking, Layla was also starving. She may have appeared to have eaten a lot, but the dishes ordered were truly far too spicy. She had drunk more water than she had actually eaten. Later, at Asher's suggestion, the two went to a small homely restaurant. It was not a high-end location, but Asher had just wanted to eat to fill their stomachs.
