Mrs. Parker's question drew everyone's attention. The rumors of Jack breaking off his engagement with Julia because of another woman were rife.
Alice felt uncomfortable under the scrutinizing gazes. She met Jack's gaze; his eyes were inscrutable.
He looked at her, saying calmly, "Not yet."
Mrs. Garcia looked pleased. She'd known Jack wouldn't publicly acknowledge a girl from a modest family. This was probably a temporary infatuation; he'd eventually marry someone of equal standing.
Mrs. Parker pressed, "But you called Miss Windham
your girlfriend earlier."
“Because I haven't won her heart yet. It's wishful thinking on my part,” Jack said, his voice smooth and sincere.
Alice's heart skipped a beat. She hadn't expected him to publicly humble himself like this.
Mrs. Parker's smile faltered; she was surprised. Alice had managed to completely charm Jack. Mrs. Garcia smiled, but her eyes were cold. Losing the man she'd had her eye on for years wouldn't sit well.
“Mr. Wilson needs to work hard. Alice had many suitors in school,” Mary said, linking arms with Alice.“If he doesn't act fast, someone else will steal her away."
Mrs. Parker frowned."Mary, don't say such things."
Aunt, I'm telling the truth." Mary subtly supported Alice; she knew everyone looked down on Alice because of her family.
Jack looked at Mary."Happy birthday. Time flies. I remember you as a little girl.”
"I used to chase you two around. But because of my leg, I'd often get hurt, and Grandma Wilson would scold you,” Mary said, her mood improving."It's time for dancing. Alice, do you dance?”
Alice nodded. She'd attended countless events like this in A City.
Mary extended her hand."May I have this dance?"
Mrs. Garcia interjected, “Mary, you don't invite girls to dance. Dance with Mr. Wilson; you've known each other since childhood."
Mrs. Parker agreed. "Yes, you were supposed to dance with Mr. Windham. Dance with Mr. Wilson instead."
Alice looked at Mrs. Garcia; she was a master manipulator. This would make others resent Mary for dancing with Jack, especially mentioning their childhood friendship.
Mary refused."No, Mr. Wilson should dance with Alice."
Mrs. Garcia persisted.“Mary, it's your birthday. Miss Windham wouldn't mind, would she?"
Alice met her gaze, smiling."I don't mind."
“See? Mary, don't be shy," Mrs. Garcia said sweetly, but her eyes held coldness.
Mary glanced anxiously at Alice and Jack; she knew Mrs. Garcia was manipulating them.
Jack looked at Mary.“Sorry, I only want to dance with the girl I like. But I can replace you a different

"I'm here! Didn't miss the cake cutting, did I?" Andrew Yates arrived, with Wilson Garcia. Mary breathed a sigh of relief.“Zifeng, may I have this dance?”
“Of course! Let me protect you; I won't let any other guy have a chance." Andrew Yates, understanding something was amiss, invited Mary.
He whispered, "What's going on?"
“Mrs. Garcia wants Mr. Wilson to dance with me and leave Alice out.” Mary explained her close friendship with Andrew Yates.
Andrew Yates understood."The Mos are persistent."
Alice watched Mary and Andrew Yates dance, noticing Mrs. Garcia's displeasure. Alice looked at her directly."You're Max's mother, right?"
“Yes. What do you want?” Mrs. Garcia's coldness lessened, her smile deepening. What was Alice's plan?
Alice said, "Your daughter, Max, falsely accused me of theft and wanted to send me to jail." Mrs. Garcia's smile vanished. She cursed Max mentally. What a stupid daughter! Despite her anger, Mrs. Garcia spoke calmly."I just found out. Max is easily influenced. I've already scolded her."
She turned to Mrs. Parker. "I'm so sorry."
Mrs. Parker understood and turned to Alice."Miss Windham, you wouldn't mind a little inciden like this, right?"
Alice's eyes grew colder. They were trying to morally pressure her.
Jack, his face stern, cut in.“She's kind and forgiving, but that doesn't mean *I* am
