Lane purposely steered the conversation towards Everett’s illegitimate child.
He wanted Dorothy to give up and let her know that Everett was not the saint she thought he was.

As Lane spoke, Dorothy went silent. But this was within Lane’s expectations.

Lane interpreted this as Dorothy refusing to give up on Everett. She still cared about Everett’sdecisions.
“Okay, 111 ask for you. Dorothy, even though you were once married, you’re divorced now. You have toaccept that he’s moved on. Everett, with his status, is bound to have a succession of women by hisside. Having an illegitimate child is not surprising.”
Lane’s constant reference to the illegitimate child‘ made Dorothy uncomfortable. “Everett just doesn’tknow, so it shouldn’t be considered illegitimate, right
“Aren’t all children born out of wedlock considered illegitimate? What’s the difference?”
