Born Mine -
Chapter 37
A look crossed her face so fast that I was unable to get a good look at what it was. She opened and closed her mouth repeatedly like a fish and finally settled for crossing her arms over her chest. She glanced around at the bar to make sure there was no one waiting to be served.
"It depends on where you heard it. Why are you asking so many questions, Leindra?" "Does it matter where I heard it?"
"Not really, I guess," she muttered. "How about this, I will tell you everything you need to know after the shift, is that okay?"
I nodded and she gave me a wary smile and went towards the bar effectively marking
an end to our conversation. I tried my best to concentrate during the shift but I could not help but wonder what I was going to replace out and whether or not it had the tendency or possibility to break me.
The shift was long and it felt like it would never end. The bar was not as busy as usual. I assumed it was because people were worried that they would be next. The news about the second girl had leaked and that was all people could talk about. I tried to detach myself from the conversation but it proved to be impossible. Every single time they mentioned the girl, all I could see was that wolf with blood in its muzzle.
One particular customer was talking about seeing the body and how brutal it was. He was at my end of the bar and his words made my hands shake so hard that the bottle I was holding slipped through and shattered on the ground. There was a loud gasp as I fell to the ground and tried to clean it up. I was holding a bottle of expensive whiskey and I could not begin to imagine the price.
"Leindra, it is fine." Serena pulled me to my feet. "Do you want to take a break while I clean this up?"
"I'm fine," I assured her. "I just have very slippery fingers. I'll be fine."
I tried to sidestep her and make my way to the bar but she blocked me. "That wasn't a question, go take a break, now."
I wanted to refuse but I nodded because the truth was that I needed that break. I went into the back and slid down the wall. I buried my face into my knees and tried to regulate my breathing. I needed to get myself under control if I was going to survive in this town. I planned to leave after a while but it didn't seem like that was happening anytime soon. I wasn't going to abandon Chris in this shit show.
I spent almost ten minutes in the back just trying to regulate my breathing. Once I felt I was okay, I made my way back to the bar. Serena made sure to keep an eye on me the entire night. It was annoying but I didn't blame her because I was the one who was acting like a frightened child
"You are an adult Leindra," I muttered to myself. "You should act like it."
"I hear talking to yourself is never a good sign," one of the patrons muttered to himself and I flushed pink when I realized I had spoken out loud. "Then again, are there any good signs in this town?"
As soon as the shift ended, I grabbed my stuff and practically pulled Serena out of the bar. I could not wait to get the answers I needed. We got to my car and I was about to get into the driver's side when she stopped me and held out her hand.
"I can drive," I began but she shook her head and demanded I hand her the key. I muttered a few words under my breath and gave it to her.
"You have been fidgety all night. The last thing I need is for you to see something that scares you and you throw us into a ditch."
"I'm not going to throw us into a ditch," I mumbled but I got into the passenger side. "Where are we going?"
"There's a café where we can talk."
She started to drive and things were going fine when I noticed that she kept glancing towards the mirror. I turned in my seat but I couldn't see anything behind us. I checked twice to be sure that I was seeing right but the roads were clear. In fact, we were the only ones on the road.
"What are you looking at?" I asked her finally and she bit the inside of her mouth to keep silent. "Tell me, Serena. What do you keep glancing at?"
"The wolf is following us," she cursed under her breath and hit the gas pedal so hard that I slammed into the chair hard. "It's hiding in the shadows but I know for a fact that it is following us."
"Where are we going?"

"My place, it is less likely to fuck with us if it is in a werewolf community. I'm not putting you or your family in danger or Darius will have my fucking head."
I glanced in the mirror and that was when I saw it. It was the same wolf I saw in the early hours of the morning and because of how dark it was, it was able to hide in the shadows but I could see the bright red eyes. Fear gripped me and I could feel my legs become paralyzed in my seat.
"Isn't a wolf faster than a car?" I asked and Serena shot me a look. "We are going to die, aren't we?"
"Nothing is going to happen," she assured me. "I already called Darius and he is on his way. We are going to be safe, I promise you."
"You didn't even pick up a phone, how the hell did you call him?"
I was practically yelling by now and I could see that she was a little annoyed but she just ran her hands through her hair.
"We have something called a mind link and I would take the time to explain it if we were not being chased by a homicidal wolf."
As the words left her lips, I noticed that the wolf had gotten closer to us. It looked prepared to jump and attack us but suddenly, it was knocked off guard by a loud bullet. I saw Darius standing there with a shotgun in his hands.
"Why doesn't he shift?" I asked Serena but she ignored me. "He could get hurt." "He won't, now are you going to focus on Darius or getting to safety."
We got to her house within the next five minutes. It was a beautiful two-story house with ivy growing on the walls. It looked like a medieval cottage in the middle of a flower field. I was shocked that Serena would live in a house that looked like a rainbow threw up on but I guessed looks could be deceiving.

She got out of the car first and when she was sure that it was safe, she pulled me into the house and locked it behind us. My heart was racing and Serena brought a glass of water for me. I gulped it down immediately and she ushered me over to her couch. Her couch had floral prints and her coffee table was hand-crafted. On another day, I would have taken the time to admire her house but I was shaking and I could barely get my thoughts to align.
"What are mates?" I asked once I had found my words. She turned to me with a bewildered look. "I need to talk about something that isn't what happened. Tell me what mates are."
"Mate is a short form for the word soul mate. We all have one assigned to us by the moon goddess. Your mate is supposed to be your equal in every way that counts. You meet them and it feels like your life is complete. The mate bond is one of the strongest things in the world and no matter how hard you try, you can't fight it."
As her words registered in my ears, I shook my head. There was no way that Darius and
I were mates. I hated him, he was self-righteous, obnoxious, rude and entitled. There was no way he could be my mate because I was not a wolf. I was human and we didn't have wolves, we had partners that we bonded with.
"Your mate has to be another wolf, right?" I asked and she shook her head.
"I have seen cases where a wolf is mated to a vampire." I blanched at the thought of vampires existing in Lunarius. "Don't worry, there are no vampires here and if there were, you would know. They only seem to come out at night."
"A wolf can be mated to a human then," I deduced and she nodded. "Someone said that Darius and I were mates."
"You are, Leindra, I am not going to ask you to accept him, I am just going to say that you cannot fight that bond."
She wanted to say more but was cut off by a knock on the door. She peered through the peephole and opened it to reveal Darius. There was blood splattered on his shirt and he looked downright pissed.
