Chapter 38

He stormed into the living space and just as I was about to ask Serena to stay, she mumbled a stupid excuse under her breath and disappeared into another room. It was just Darius and I and I could feel the annoyance radiating off his body. I kept my eyes on the ground but glanced up at him through my lashes. He looked hot with the blood splatters all over him and I couldn't help but realize how disturbing that sounded.

"What the fuck were you thinking?" he practically spat as he made his way over to me. "When there is a threat, normal people go straight fucking home. What does Leindra do? She decides to go on a stupid dinner."

"I'm allowed to have alone time with my friends." I crossed my arms over my chest. "Besides, I think it was safer that I was with Serena while it happened than being attacked on my own."

"Serena cannot protect you. You would have died and taken someone else with you. Does that sound better to you?"

It suddenly hit me why he was furious. He wasn't angry because I had gone out, he was angry that I had put Serena in danger. I crossed my arms over my chest and scoffed. Why did I think that Darius would be worried about me? We had agreed to a one-time-only thing, there was nothing else connecting both of us.

I hated the bubbling feeling that crawled up my chest. It was suffocating and it left a bitter taste in my mouth. Green was a pretty color on me but envy was not. I had no reason to be jealous because there was nothing between Darius and me and that was exactly how I wanted it.

"If you were so worried about Serena then you should have taken her home yourself," I said unable to stop the venom from spewing from my lips. "The last time I checked, she was a grown adult and she asked me to go with her to answer some questions. Before you think about blaming me for not protecting your girlfriend's ass, why don't you replace out the details first?"

I made to move past him but he reached out and grabbed my arm. I tried to pull away but instead of letting me go, He turned me around and pinned me against the door. "If you don't let me go then I will knee you in the balls and permanently destroy your chances to have kids."

"You're jealous". he mused with a small smirk “I never would have thought that, vou would be jealous."

"I'm not jealous." I pushed him off me and he moved back. "What I want is to get out of here and you're in my fucking way."

I tried to open the door but he reached out and slammed it shut. "Sit down, we need to talk first."

"I have nothing to talk to you about."

I tried to open the door again but he slammed it shut once more and this time, he pressed his body into mine. She placed one cup of tea in front of me and took the last available couch. The room was stretched with silence and I was determined not to be the one to break it so I leaned back in my seat, crossed my legs at the knees and took a sip from my drink. "Is one of you going to tell me why you didn't go home first?" Darius asked after a beat of silence.

"I'm good," I waved him off and I saw his jaw tick. "What I would like to know is why you didn't just shift. You could have died."

"Were you worried about me?"

There was a squeak that came from Serena and I raised a brow. I never would have expected her to be capable of that kind of sound. Seeing her in her home, I realized what a stark contrast it was to the persona she gave off at the bar. Here she seemed small and almost young but at the bar, she gave off big sister vibes. "Your shift ends by ten now," Darius announced and I turned to him in shock. "You start two hours earlier than usual and you end by ten. I'm not risking having you out this late anymore."

"It isn't that I don't appreciate being home this early but what spurred this on? I could just as well go out with a friend by ten. If you plan to keep me off the streets then changing my work hours won't do that."

"You don't have any friends."

"Fuck you," I spat, hating the way his words hit their desired mark. "Serena is my friend."

"Serena is a member of my pack who was tasked with watching over you. Do not make the mistake of assuming that you are friends because my orders will always surpass your friendship."

There was a beat of silence then I dropped the mug hard on the table. The sound reverberated and tea spilled onto my hands. I stood to my feet and walked right out of the door without looking back. I heard Darius mutter a curse under his breath and I heard Serena call out to me but I didn't respond to either of them.

I had opened the door of my car when Serena finally caught up to me. She grabbed my upper arm and for the first time that night, she met my eyes. There were a million apologies in them but she wasn't the one I needed an apology from.

Darius somehow knew what chords to strike and what words to say to make me feel like complete and utter crap. He didn't need to rub it in my face that the only person who agreed to become my friend was someone that he ordered to watch over me. I didn't ask him to put anyone over me and I didn't ask him to give me a job. He chose to butt himself into my life and that was not my fault.

"I'm sorry," Serena said softly. "He didn't mean it, he is just pissed."

"Yes he did, don't make excuses for him, he is a grown man and it is about time that he acted like it."

"Fine, let's assume he did mean it, he's wrong. I am your friend and it isn't because he asked me to watch over you. It is because I think you are an amazing person."

"Thanks for the kind words but I don't care anymore."

She pursed her lips and I could tell that my words hurt her. I felt bad but I couldn't bring myself to apologize out of shame. She opened her mouth to speak but the front door to her house opened and Darius walked out. He didn't look the least bit remorseful. He leaned against the door frame and crossed his arms over his chest.

"Get inside, Serena," he ordered and her eyes moved from me to him as if unsure of who to listen to. "I'm not going to ask again."

"I think you've strayed too far from your leash," I told her unable to keep the venom out of my voice and I saw the impact of my words hit her like a blow.

She sighed and walked back up the stairs and into the house. A part of me was hoping

she would refuse him and stay with me but I guess I was wrong. Just as I was about to get into my car, Darius spoke.

"Go straight home, Leindra, or I'll know."

"Why don't you take a knife and shove it up your ass?"

He had the audacity to laugh at my words. During my entire ride, I heard the sound
