Chapter 33:

“The auto club in the city south has just opened new racetracks. It’s the largest in the country and features the latest car technology. I thought you might enjoy experiencing the thrill of racing with me.”

It was unusual for Rhys to speak so much.

His words made Harlee pause, and after a moment of consideration, she nodded.

“Alright.”

She had been keeping an eye on the racetrack in the city south, planning to visit once it opened. Since the opportunity had presented itself, there was no reason to delay. Racing was one of her favorite pastimes.

The racetrack, located in the suburbs, stretched across several hills. Winding mountain roads had been transformed into sleek racing tracks. The grandeur of the venue was a clear reflection of the owner’s immense wealth.

On its opening day, the racetrack was teeming with activity. Only the elite of Baythorn were allowed entry. Those without social status were barred. It was an exclusive club, with membership fees starting at a million dollars.

Rhys led Harlee inside with just a quick facial scan. Moments after they entered, a manager approached them, respectfully addressing their needs.

Harlee glanced at Rhys.

During her time with the Gill family, she had been exposed to the upper echelons of society, though she was often overlooked.

Her lack of interest in the complex social games further distanced her from that circle. She didn’t recognize most of the elites or know their names.

Yet, from her time with Rhys, she could tell he was someone of significance.

“Mr. Green, the car you mentioned has arrived, but there are some documents that require your signature,” the manager said quietly.

Rhys stood up to follow the manager, saying to Harlee, “Miss Sanderson, feel free to look around.”

“I’ll be back shortly.”

“Go ahead,” Harlee replied.

With Rhys gone, Harlee wandered around, feeling a bit bored. The exhibition showcased many of the newest car models, featuring cutting-edge technology from all over the world. Many of these cars weren’t even available to the public yet, and the guests admired them eagerly.

But what impressed others didn’t interest Harlee in the slightest. To her, they all seemed irrelevant. She was here solely for the excitement of racing, eager to indulge in her passion.

“You! What are you doing here?” a voice shouted, accompanied by the sound of high heels clicking as they approached.

Harlee turned to see Adelina.

Dressed to perfection, with flawless makeup and designer clothes, Adelina blended effortlessly with the other socialites present.

Next to her was Collin, whom she clung to tightly. Together, they made quite the striking couple, surrounded by a group of young people who appeared to be part of their regular crowd.

Adelina called out to Harlee, and several people in the group recognized her, their faces lighting up with the promise of drama.

“Isn’t she a former member of the Gill family? I heard she went back to the countryside. What’s she doing here?”
