Chapter 35:

Although the Gill and George families were close, Harlee’s interactions with Collin had been minimal. In the past, it had always been him seeking her out, pretending they were young lovers.

Yet, after discovering that Harlee was not the real Gill family heiress, Collin’s attitude had instantly shifted.

He showered Adelina with attention and made sure to appear with her on every occasion.

Collin had been born out of wedlock, and Harlee knew better than to fall for his facade. She had seen through his hidden agenda long ago.

Whoever the real Gill family heiress was, it held no real significance to him. What mattered to Collin was a marriage of convenience to secure his position within his own family.

“Harlee, Collin used to be so kind to you, yet you say such cruel things to hurt him.” Adelina widened her eyes, seeming shocked while trying to appear endearing.

Those around them, misled by Adelina’s words, started to whisper criticisms of Harlee.

Adelina noticed Harlee standing alone, her eyes twinkling with smugness.

“Harlee, you are not here to work, are you?”

At Adelina’s words, the crowd cast disdainful glances at Harlee.

“Who would have guessed that the former heiress of the Gill family needs to work here to make a living?”

“How could she still be this arrogant? Even at this point, she doesn’t know her place.”

“Why don’t we do her a favor by helping her know her place?”

“I’m on board with that.”

Amid the crowd’s jeers, a girl next to Adelina picked up a glass of wine and splashed it at Harlee.

Harlee easily sidestepped the splash.

“How dare you avoid it?” The girl glared, feeling embarrassed in front of everyone.

Her face burned with anger.

“Can’t you do anything properly, Phoebe?”

At her friend’s taunt, Phoebe Watts, who had tried to humiliate Harlee, felt even more embarrassed. She slammed the glass onto the floor, sending shards flying.

“Look at this mess! Aren’t you a waitress here? Get down and clean it up! If you don’t do it, I’ll report you and get you fired.”

Watching the scene unfold, Adelina masked her smugness with a feigned expression of concern while pulling on Phoebe’s arm.

“Phoebe, isn’t this a bit much? It took her a great deal of effort to escape from her dilapidated house and get a job here. If she loses this job, she might end up homeless, certainly not able to afford a motel.”

As expected, Adelina’s words only emboldened Phoebe further. The crowd watched, enjoying the spectacle with the presumption that Harlee would yield for the sake of her employment.

Yet, much to their surprise, Harlee remained motionless.

“Didn’t you hear me?” Phoebe shouted at Harlee.

Adelina seized the moment to taunt Harlee, sounding as though she genuinely cared, while the truth spoke otherwise.

“Harlee, don’t be so stubborn. My parents have made it clear that they would no longer support you. If you don’t give in now, even I couldn’t help you out despite my genuine desire to lend a helping hand.”
