Chapter 38:
But to Phoebe’s shock, Adelina took a step back, avoiding her gaze.
“You…” Phoebe nearly choked on her anger. She had naively thought they were true friends.
Adelina was flustered yet determined not to defend Phoebe, as doing so would mean facing the same ridicule. If word got out, it would disgrace the Gill family and ruin her obedient image in her parents’ eyes.
After weighing her options, Adelina realized she could only let Phoebe down for now.
As Phoebe remained silent, a few waiters walked by, their chatter loud enough for those nearby to overhear.
“Is she trying to backtrack on her promises?”
“Ugh! What’s with the arrogance she taunted others with earlier? She claimed to come from a wealthy family, yet she clearly lacks manners.”
“She’s all show on the outside. Who knows about her true nature? Likely a mean girl.”
The waiters’ chatter grew louder, a deliberate move to mock Phoebe for her earlier behavior of belittling those in the service sector.
The irony was that those Phoebe had just looked down upon were now taunting her, pleased to see her being ridiculed.
Finding the waiters’ remarks unacceptable, Phoebe vented her frustration by shouting, “Who do you think you are, a bunch of nobodies?”
The waiters’ expressions soured. They were just here to work, and now they were being despised for this? Who would put up with that?
“What’s wrong with us talking? Is there a rule that says waiters can’t chat at the racetrack?”

“Right! We’re just having a conversation. What’s it to you?”
“Why don’t you start by cleaning the floor, as you said earlier? We’re just here to do our jobs.”
In a fit of anger, Phoebe rolled her eyes.
“You… I’ll report you!”
“Go ahead and report us.
Actually, we’d like to tell the manager how you just gave the Black Card holder a hard time. The manager might just throw you guys out.”
Adelina and Collin instantly became agitated. Securing a membership was no easy feat, and Phoebe had been brought along by them.
If the manager learned about the details of this incident and decided to kick Phoebe out, their membership might be at risk—an outcome they couldn’t accept, as they had planned to leverage the membership to make connections.
Now that Phoebe posed a threat to what they valued, they knew they had to make their stances clear.
“Phoebe, that’s enough. Stop being unreasonable.” Adelina stepped forward to pull Phoebe away.
Collin chimed in, “You’re clearly at fault. Let’s just leave it at that. No more scenes.”
Phoebe was choked with anger.
How had the whole incident become solely her fault now?
“Let go of me!” Phoebe forcefully shook off Adelina’s hands and turned to leave in a huff.
Having known Adelina for years, this marked the first time Phoebe had seen how hypocritical she could be.
