Chapter 48:

Because of Adelina’s words, everyone pitied her, thinking Harlee had deliberately taken Adelina’s place in the past, enjoying privileges that weren’t rightfully hers.

Phoebe sneered, “When the true heir returns, the pretender has to step aside. Look at Harlee’s shabby attire. She must be leading a hard life now. She’s only suited to toil in the fields, not to enjoy any luxuries.”

Seeing Harlee unaffected, Phoebe mocked, “What? Can’t you even afford the cheapest race car?”

Suddenly, the manager sensed a chill in the air.

He didn’t dare meet Rhys’s eyes and quickly moved to secure a car for Harlee.

But before the manager could act, Harlee’s calm yet clear voice stopped him.

“I have a race car.”

The manager recalled Harlee had turned down his earlier offer of a race car.

“You have a car?” Phoebe burst out laughing as if it were the funniest thing she’d ever heard.

She pointed at Harlee and yelled, “Don’t tell me that beat-up old car at the entrance is yours!”

“Phoebe, what are you saying?” Adelina gently patted her hand, playfully scolding, “In a place like this, how could there possibly be a battered old car at the entrance?”

“Phoebe must be referring to the janitor’s vehicle, right?”

“No way.

Even the janitors wouldn’t drive something like that. I saw on TV that only junk dealers drive those.”

“Ha-ha… Without the Gill family, Harlee is worse than a junk dealer.”

“How hilarious…”

Phoebe and her group erupted into laughter.

Adelina joined in the laughter but put on a show of sympathy.

“Harlee, if you can’t afford to rent one, I can lend a hand. You were with the Gill family for quite some time. We have a connection.”

With that, Adelina signaled to a service attendant and murmured a few words.

“Adelina, you’re too generous.” Phoebe frowned.

“Why bother helping her at all?”

Collin addressed Harlee, “Since when do you know how to race? This isn’t a game.

Don’t push yourself too hard! No one will come to your rescue if you mess up.”

Adelina’s expression shifted slightly. She hastily gripped Collin’s arm and said sweetly, “Collin, you really don’t need to worry about Harlee’s affairs!”

Adelina noticed Collin’s eyes were still on Harlee and tightened her hold on his arm.

Collin grimaced from the pressure but remained focused on Harlee, ignoring Adelina.

Harlee stood impassive.

“This doesn’t concern you,” she responded coldly.

Collin frowned at her.

“You’re just embarrassing yourself,” he said sharply.

He was curious to see how Harlee would manage.

A woman out of her depth needed to learn her place.
