I groan as someone shakes me awake, Miya and I talked well into the early hours of the

morning, and I haven't had much sleep.

I wish whoever it was would just fuck off.

Why does everyone have to disturb me when I finally have the chance to close my

eyes? First Miya and now whoever it was shaking me like a rattle.

"Go away." I grumble, rolling over onto my other side.

"Elora get up." Comes Suer's voice. "Elora the war has been started we have to leave, now."

My eyes shoot open, and my heart falls to the floor.

The war has been started.

Already?!

Fuck. Fuck everything.

I thought we had a plan!

"When?" I ask, sitting up and rubbing my eyes.

"Darax's men came and demanded you be brought to the capital; Maddox refused and

killed all but one of them." Suer looks concerned. "He sent the one who survived back with a message."

My breath shudders.

Of course, Maddox was the one to start the war, it was just like him to go against the original plan.

"What was the message?" I ask softly.

I was almost too afraid to ask, but I have to know. I'll be fighting beside them after all, even though it was just last night that Miya convinced me that I needed to join the

cause.

I didn't want to kill anyone, and I still don't, but as she rudely pointed out, if I don't kill them, they will kill us.

No one else will fight for our happiness, we have to do it ourselves, no matter the cost. I will protect Miya whatever the personal cost.

Even if I lose my soul.

"He told the guy to inform Darax of the uprising, he told him to say; 'your reign is over, today a new one begins' and then he tore off the guys arm." Suer helps me stand; my legs barely able to hold me up.

The training was harsh on my body, and it was really beginning to take its toll. I didn't know how much more I could do without a day of rest.

"We are so fucked." I grumble.

Maddox never was one for subtle hints, and he didn't know the meaning of mercy, not even towards me, his mate.

I can't really be surprised. If I had gone to the capital I would have been a sitting duck, and to make matters worse, Darax's power has already been proven to have a hold

over me.

I may not be able to fight it off next time, though I hope I can. The outcome of the war depends on it.

"The war has certainly started with a bang." He agrees, smirking a little.

"This isn't funny." I growl, straightening out my dress. "Where are Ryker and Maddox right now?"

"In the office." He says, "do you need me to escort you there?"

I nod, "I do, just let me get something else to wear and put some shoes on."

He smiles and nods, walking back out of the room to wait in the hallway as he always does. He gives me as much privacy as he can whilst also protecting me.

He's become a close friend actually, which I am surprised about, especially with how he acted.

I might have forgiven him, but I don't think I ever really had a choice. Not in the grand scheme of things.

He will always be around me, he's my protector and he was assigned to me for the rest of my life, I guess. So, we will be spending a large amount of time in each others company, and I'd rather be friendly than not.

"Make friends, not enemies." That's what my mother always said. She was wise, strict and sometimes cruel, but wise.

She was always in a bad mood too, even on the good days we had together, I guess her job on the council had something to do with that. Though now I will never know.

I was supposed to take over her council seat when she retired, she was training me for it, or she tried to anyway. I always found new ways to disappoint her without even trying.

I wonder what she would think of me now, sleeping with the enemy.

I heave a sigh and walk into the wardrobe, picking out a black wooden dress, thick

grey tights and a pair of brown boots. It's not the best, but it'll do.

It's not a fashion parade, it's a war.

I meet Suer outside the door, three others following us down the hall.

"Why are they coming?" I ask, trying to keep my voice low.

All I can think is, what about Miya? Does she know the war has begun? Is she afraid?

I'll have to ask her later when it's just the two of us again, right now she's with the other humans, working somewhere in the castle.

To be honest, I'm not even sure what she does, she doesn't talk about it much. I'll have to ask this time.

If she doesn't like it, I can talk to Ryker about it, maybe I can make it so she doesn't have to work.

If she doesn't want to, I won't make her. I won't let them make her.

"I was commanded to make sure four of us are with you at all times." He says, glancing

behind us. "They are my most trusted men, they won't harm you."

"I wasn't worried about that." I say with a laugh. "I just don't understand why I need extra guards inside the castle. Aren't we safe here?"

Are we going to be safe anywhere?

"An attack can come at any time." He tells me. "We have to be ready for anything, and keeping you safe is important to both myself and the kings."

I'm silent for a moment while I think, don't they relate I can protect myself? I have done it for countless years.

I even protected others where I could.

"It isn't about your own ability, Elora." He says, almost like he was reading my mind, "When they come, they will come in force, and we don't want to be caught off guard. That's the most dangerous thing right now." He sighs. "I know you are powerful, but I also know that you hesitate to make the final blow, and that will get you killed."

"I'm not sorry for having a conscience." I snap, huffing in annoyance.

Since when did having a heart become a bad thing?

Fuck. I hate this.

I hate it all.

"Hesitation is the difference between life or death, it hasn't nothing to do with your

conscience." He snaps back. "We are here."

The office door looms over me.

Once I step inside everything will change, I will change.
