The Beginning of The End -
Chapter 86
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't fall asleep, I've counted and breathed and pretended everything was fine, but sleep just wouldn't come to me. Not tonight. Not with Miya still missing.
I was tempted to call for one of my mates, but I'm sure they are extremely busy, we did just start a war after all. There's no time for me to be weak. Everyone's lives are at stake, and they are counting on me to be able to take Darax down.
Though I'm starting to think that maybe they've placed their hope in the wrong person. I've never enjoyed hurting anyone, not even when I had to in order to survive.
But I don't have to want to do it, I just have to do it.
I have to kill to survive. That is just the way that the world works now.
That's the way the strong survive.
And whilst I have never been tougher than most men, I have something that humans
don't, I have my powers.
That is what always saved me.
My powers are the reason I am alive.
I get dressed in a thick winter gown, the cotton soft and gentle against my skin, I put
on some tights and some boots too. I don't know what the day will bring and I want to be prepared.
I just hope that there is news about Miya.
I hope that she has been found alive and well, but I also know that hoping for such things can be foolish. It can create false hope where their should be caution and dread.
I just need to know, whatever the outcome, I can't stay in the dark like this. It's driving me insane.
Please be ok. Don't die Miya. Not now. We've been through so much together. This can't be how it ends. It can't.
I take several deep breaths and lean against the bed, my heart is breaking into a thousand and one tiny pieces and there is nothing I can do to stop it.
The only thing that could help me now would be Miya walking through the door with a smile on her face. Alive and well.
But I also know that it won't happen.
People don't just disappear, something must have happened to her, she wouldn't just abandon me without a proper goodbye. It's not who she is.
She cares for me, I know she does, and just as I would never want to hurt her, I know that she doesn't want to hurt me.
I feel calm again, or as calm as I can be as I walk towards the door, knowing that I have to replace Maddox or Ryker.
They'll know something. They have to.
Suer is outside the door, along with Henri, they both glance my way, their eyes widening in surprise.
"We thought you were sleeping." Henri says, helping me to close the door.
I take a long breath, trying not to cry. "I tried but I couldn't, is there any news about Miya?"
I feel so useless to her now. I should be able to help in the search not lay down in bed.
They both glance at each other, their eyes full of regret.
I tense. My heart crumbles.
"What's happened?" I ask, my skin turning to ice beneath the cotton dress.
Sure takes my hand and holds it tightly, "the search was called off an hour ago."
No. She can't be lost.
"You didn't replace her?" I whisper, a sob tearing out of my chest.
Henri shakes his head, "we didn't, before we could extend the search the kings called it off, they ordered everyone back."
What?!
What would make Maddox and Ryker do that? Are they trying to punish me for something?
They are playing with the life of my friend!
"Did they say why?" I ask, my temper bubbling.
If she dies because they called off the search I will personally cut the skin from their bones and feed it to their own men.
"A letter arrived for them a couple of hours ago, it was brought by a stranger, and when they returned from their office they called off the search." Suer pulls me into his arms and holds me gently. "I'm sorry, my Queen."
My mind has a million question swirling around, and the are only two people who can answer them.
The same two people who brought me here to begin with.
"Take me to my mates." I say, pulling away from Suer.

"Is that wise my Queen?" Henri asks, "they did not seem in the best of moods."
I straighten my shoulders and puff out my chest, "I am your Queen and I gave you an order, take me to them, now."
I don't want to be mean to them, but sometimes it's the only way to get what you
want, and I'll do anything right now to replace out what the fuck is going on.
What was in the note? And why did they call off the search?
More importantly, why was the note from?
So many questions.
Henri bows and turns, "right this way." He says, all the emotion gone from his voice.
I've hurt him, I know that I have.
But I didn't have a choice, he wasn't going to listen to me, and I need to see Ryker and Maddox, I need to know what is happening.
I follow Henri whilst Suer follows behind me, his eyes scanning and searching every dark corner we pass.
He's waiting for an attack from the darkness, but from who?
Yes we have gone to war, but Darax and his men are miles away, they couldn't get here
so soon.
I don't think that they could anyway.
Or maybe there is still trouble within the ranks of hellhounds and vamps.
I wouldn't blame them for wanting to kill me, it's been their job for years and then
suddenly their kings being one home and declare me queen.
It must all be very confusing.
But it also isn't my fault. It's not like I asked for this.
Henri stops outside of the office and knocks on the door, waiting for a reply, but I don't have time for that, I push past Henri and walk into the office, slamming the door closed behind me as Maddox and Ryker look up from the desk, their eyes dark.
Before they can scold me, I almost scream in their faces, I'm so furious that I can't hold it back any longer.
"You called off the search!" I scream as loud as I can, "how dare you do that!" I'm panting for breath, my head hurts, but I continue. "How dare you leave her out there all alone! She is my friend."

The last words breaks me and I drop to my knees, neither of my mates moving to comfort me.
"Why?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
How can they do this?
Maddox walks towards me and pulls me to my feet, "we have our reasons, so let us explain." He leads me back to the desk. "You got a letter a few hours ago, before we called off the search."
"Me?" I ask, eyes wide. "I thought the letter was addressed to the both of you?"
Ryker shakes his head, "it was meant for your eyes only, but we couldn't trust it, so we read it."
"What did it say?" I murmur, almost too afraid to ask.
Whatever it was can't be good, especially if it made them call off the search.
"See for yourself." Ryker says, handing me a small piece of folded paper.
My breath shudders as I unfold the paper and read it aloud, "I have something you
want, fae, something precious to you. She calls herself Miya."
My heart splinters. My chest constricts. My eyes bulge.
Miya wasn't missing, she didn't wander off, someone took her by force.
Someone took her to get to me.
"Who sent the letter?" I ask, my hands shaking.
Maddox wraps his arms around me, holding me together even as my world falls apart.
Ryker plops down in his chair, "Darax."
One word. One name. One person.
The worst person imaginable, and he has taken Miya.
He had kidnapped my friend.
Miya is truly gone.
