The Beginning of The End -
Chapter 94
I think of a thousand and one words to say to him, but not a single one conveys how
Grateful I am for what he has done for me, he saved Miya, even though she is a human. Even though he does not care if she lived or died. He did it because I care about her. He did it because I needed him to.
And he isn't once asked for anything in return for that kindness, but I want to give him... something. I'm not sure what to say, or what to do. But I will think of something eventually, and when I do, he will be the first to know.
He risked everything, his people, his life, the war and yet he doesn't even seem a little bit phased that he could have died out there.
It is as though he doesn't care about the consequences, which in a way, makes perfect sense. This is Maddox after all. The hell hound King. He does whatever he wants to do, nothing more, nothing less.
If he didn't want to save Miya she would still be out there now, suffering all alone. But he did save her, and I know that he only did it for me. Not for her. Not even a little.
I follow him across the hallway and down the stairs to my chamber, stopping outside the door, guards blocking our path.
One of them bows, "my King, she has not left the room, just as you instructed."
I turn to Maddox, "you told them not to let her leave?" I ask.
He nods, "I didn't want her to get taken again." He says, "I wasn't about to risk my life for her to go missing the novelty next morning."
It makes sense I suppose, if she wandered too far out of the castle on her own no one would help her, they all despise humans.
They blame them for all of their problems, just as Miya and I blame them for all of
ours.
"Let me though." I say to the guard. "I'm going in to see her."
Maddox nods from behind me, "let her through, and make sure nothing happens to either of them, if Elora leaves, you follow, but someone always has to be with the human girl. Do not let her out of your sight."
The human girl. He doesn't even say her name.
Iturn to him. gently holding his hand. “I'll see, vou at breakfast."
He smiles down at me, "it's more like lunch now, little fae, but I will meet you there."
He glances down at the watch on his wrist. "You have thirty minutes. Otherwise, I will come looking for you."
I let go of his hand, "Thirty minutes and I will be at the table." I say softly, trying to calm the beating of my heart.
Why am I so nervous to go in there and see her?
Will she be angry with me for not coming to her when she needed me? I let Maddox go alone, with his men. I didn't go with them. He wouldn't allow me to.

But would she understand that?
I can never tell her that Ryker wanted to leave her there to suffer and die, I can never tell her that I had no choice but to agree.
I push past the guards and turn the key in the door, walking inside and slamming it shut behind me.
Miya is there, sat on the bed reading a thick book. She looks up when the door slams, her eyes wide, "Elora." She gasps, "you scared me."
I clear my throat, stepping further into the room, "I didn't mean to." I say, "I came to see how you were."
She folds the page she is reading and places the book onto the bed, turning her whole body to face me, "They won't let me leave this room." She says, "they said I can have whatever I want, but that it has to be brought to me. I can't leave."
Sadness threatens to clutch me, "They are doing it to protect you, Miya." I tell her, "we don't know why Darax wanted you, we have to keep you safe until we can win this war."
She stares at me, as though she can see into my soul through my eyes, "That's not the only reason I'm here." She says with a scoff, "it's too much trouble for them to follow me the way that they do for you. I'm just a human, you are the kings mate."
"I don't think that's the case." I argue, "you are here because we don't know who the spies are in the castle. We don't know who is reporting back to Darax."

"He didn't even want me." She snaps, sounding bitter and angry, "he only took me to lure you out of the castle. He wanted you, you are the important one, I am just a human. I'm nothing."
I walk forward and take her hands in mine, "you are not nothing." I say, leaning my forehead against hers, "you are my best friend, and I love you."
Miya pulls away, "that's sweet Elora, it really is, but I don't matter here, and I never will."
I sigh, wanting to do everything I can to comfort her from her pain, but there is nothing I can say that would ring true. She is right. She means nothing to these people. They hate humans, maybe more than they hate my kind.
They have wanted her dead since the moment she arrived.
And she would have been, if it weren't for Maddox.
"How about I ask Maddox if we can have a walk around the garden?" I say, sitting beside her, "it might do you good to get outside and feel the wind on your skin."
"That comforts you, Elora, not me." She says with a growl, "what I really want is to go back to my own wolf and stay there. I am so sick of this place and the creatures here."
I gulp down a breath, unable to tell her that her wish is in vein, they will never let her leave. Just like they will never let me leave.
We are trapped in this world now, and we can either make the best of it, or we can slowly die. There is no other choice.
