Chapter 53:

The firefighters had to rip the doors off to open the car, the two people inside were unconscious when they managed to rescue them.

Hugo opened his eyes for a moment when he felt his body being deposited on the stretcher and could see how next to him the parameters were performing resuscitation maneuvers, his eyelids felt very heavy and his eyes closed once again.

Loud lights and voices all around him woke Hugo up again, he felt very tired and sore and could barely stay awake or have a coherent thought, but only one name was current in his head.

“Sara” he mumbled with hardly any strength left, a warm hand took his.

“Sir please hold on we are almost there” the voice sounded so familiar, but it felt so far away.

“Sara ” he repeated.

“Don’t worry about the lady now, try to get better” Hugo finally recognized the voice, it was Alejandro walking beside him as the nurses and doctors carried him down the hospital corridor, tears ran down Alejandro’s cheeks helplessly as he saw Hugo in that deplorable state.

“Sara” he said for the last time in a whisper before collapsing in surrender once again.

Hugo woke up and found himself sitting on the villa’s sofa, he felt a strong pain in his neck and moved it to both sides until his joints felt better, suddenly delicate hands started to massage his neck.

“I told you not to sleep here, you could go to bed, look now your neck hurts” Sara’s voice sounded sweet and calm. Hugo suddenly remembered the accident and stood up from the couch to look at her.

“Are you ok?” he rounded the seat and checked her “Did something happen to you, are you in pain?”

“Of course I’m fine silly, you fell asleep watching the movie.”

“But we, the accident.” Hugo was confused, he clearly remembered being the car with Sara before the accident.

“What accident or accident silly, you were dreaming.”

Sara put her arms around him and standing on tiptoe gave him a kiss on the mouth.

“I’m fine, take off that bitter face, I’m here with you and I love you, come on let’s go watch some show and don’t go back to sleep I’ll eat all the fried chicken.”

Sara took him by the hand to the couch and they sat hugging while watching Netflix, Hugo looked at the woman in his arms and smiled, he felt a huge relief to see that she was safe and sound by his side. He stroked her hair and kissed her forehead.

“I love you Sara, sorry for never telling you.”

Hugo opened his eyes and the strong smell of disinfectant and the white lights on the ceiling informed him where he was, he tried to get up from the bed, but suddenly he got a strong headache.

“No sir, don’t force yourself, stay lying down” said Alejandro who was sitting next to him, he had some visible bags under his eyes that made it clear that he had clearly not slept at all. Hugo looked around for something.

“Sara. Where is Sara.” Alejandro tried to change the subject immediately.

“Do you want a pill for the pain, are you in a lot of pain?”

“I don’t want a pill I want to know where Sara is.” he shouted.

“Calm down sir, it’s not doing you any good, I’m going to get the doctor.” as soon as he finished speaking Alejandro ran out of the room in search of a doctor.

Hugo tried to remember, he forced his memory as much as he could to see if he knew anything about Sara, but the strong headache did not allow him to remember. Five minutes later Alejandro returned with three doctors and two nurses.

“I was glad to see you awake Mr. Moretti.” spoke one of the doctors.

“You are recovering very well.”

“Thank you doctor, could you inform me about my wife, the woman who was coming next to me when I had the accident.” the doctor looked at Alejandro for authorization and even he had no choice but to nod.

“Mrs. Sara Moretti suffered a cardiac arrest, fortunately the paramedics managed to arrive in time and performed the resuscitation maneuver, but she also suffered a strong blow to the head and we had to operate on her, since then she has not woken up.”

“She is…” Hugo paused, unable to say the last word, Alejandro saw what he wanted to say and quickly spoke.

“She is not dead.”

“No, the lady didn’t die” the doctor spoke again “she’s just in an induced coma, we thought it best to wait a bit before waking her up, let her wounds heal”.

“Then she is fine”. Hugo was finally able to breathe again.

“Thank you doctors, thank you for your work.”

The doctors left after telling Hugo that he needed to stay for a few more days for observation and giving instructions to the nurses. Hugo just listened and nodded, hoping they would leave as soon as possible to talk to Alejandro.

“How long was I asleep” he spoke when they were finally alone.

“Two days.”

“I want details about what happened.”

“I knew that would be the first thing you would say, so I already found out.” replied gave Alejandro passing him a folder with documents.

“The inspection of the car showed that the brakes were tampered with, it wasn’t a simple accident, plus they also removed the airbag from the pilot’s seat, that’s why Señora Sara’s injuries were more serious, while the one on her side worked as usual that’s why her injuries were more minor .
