Chapter 9:

“I’m tired, I’ll leave the rest to you all!” William Rowland left in a hurry.

Everyone looked at each other not knowing what had happened. Why did Mr. Rowland leave after conducting an interview?

While waiting uneasily, Sherry Murray received a call from the Rowland Group. They informed her that she had been accepted into the company.

“Ah, that’s great!”. Sherry immediately jumped with excitement after hanging up the phone. By being accepted by such a big company, she may also get a decent income in the future. Dan and she will have a better life together!

“Mommy, what’s wrong?”

“Son, your mommy has been accepted!”. Sherry hugged her son.

“That’s great! Mommy, you’re the best!”. Dan clapped his hands and shouted, “Ah…my mommy has a job now, My mommy is the best!”.

“Hahaha…”. Laughter spread throughout the apartment, “Let’s celebrate, Mommy will add an extra plate for you today!”.

“Okay!”.

There was no light illuminating inside the dark reserved area. The man leaned back in the chair and coldly looked at everything below. He sneered repeatedly and there were already four or five cigarette butts in the ashtray. It looked like he was trying to hide his emotions. It was obvious that he couldn’t wait any longer.

It was as if he couldn’t hear the shouts from downstairs as his cold eyes slid past the crowd, as if he was focused somewhere in the future.

“William! Hello! How long have you been waiting?”. Liam Brooks sat down on the couch as he entered the reserved area of the club, “There was a lady there who was quite pretty, so I went off to do something, sorry to keep you waiting!”.

William grimaced in disgust again and twisted his remaining cigarette in the ashtray. He stood up and glared at Liam, “Relax, I’ll go first!”.

“What, you haven’t said anything yet, how can you leave?” asked Liam.

“I promised Samuel Rowland I’d join him today!” she replied softly as she turned and walked away.

“Phew, what’s so great about having a son, I’ll get a son to take care of tomorrow too!”.

The Rowland Group was in the most luxurious area of the City. The 66-story building was tall as if it was directly in the sky. It was very majestic as the whole building was dominated by a dark blue hue. It was very bright in the morning sun.

Sherry took a deep breath as she walked into the main entrance of the building.

During business hours, the lobby of the building was filled with people passing through. Each elevator was filled with staff. They were all neatly dressed with cold faces, as if they only gave importance to their own work.

“Miss Murray, please proceed to the 66th floor to report to Mr. Rowland’s office.” She was told that her workplace was on the top floor as she entered the hallway.

Sherry took another deep breath and headed for the elevator. It was full, so, she looked to the elevator next door and no one else was there. She turned and walked toward that elevator.

“Is that her? I heard that Mr. Rowland just interviewed her, what is this woman’s background?”.

“Ah, she’s really using Mr. Rowland’s special elevator!”. The two ladies were gossiping about her at the front desk, “How silly!”.

“That’s not right, maybe she has some special relationship with Mr. Rowland?”.

“No way?”. Their discussion came to an abrupt halt when someone slowly appeared at the entrance to the lounge.

“Ah! Mr. Rowland is here!”.

“Keep quiet!”

Sherry pressed the elevator button and waited for the door to open.

William and Liam noticed Sherry as they entered the lobby. Liam blinked, ‘Wasn’t she the woman from yesterday, she seemed to have taken the wrong elevator? It was only for Mr. Rowland, is he all right?’

William looked out and saw her press the button for the special elevator. He narrowed his eyes as if he wasn’t happy about it.

William and Liam walked together towards the elevator. The moment the door opened, as Sherry stepped into the elevator, she heard voices from behind her, “Hello, Miss. This elevator is for Mr. Rowland only, the staff elevator is that way!”.

She turned her head unconsciously, their eyes met. Sherry saw first William’s cold face and Liam, who was grinning wickedly.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know that!” She apologized awkwardly. At that moment she knew the reason there was no one in that elevator.

“Never mind, now you know!” replied Liam.

“Please be aware of your position!”. William informed as he walked past her.

The moment he passed by her shoulder, Sherry caught the faint scent of tobacco on him. She was stunned and apologized again, “I’m sorry!”.

“Don’t worry, please go over there – don’t be late on the first day of work!”. Liam winked at Sherry.

Sherry was blushing as she ran to another elevator. On her first day of work, she began to realize that even Mr. Rowland’s elevator and the staff elevator were separate.

By the time she reached the top floor, it was only five minutes before work time. Sherry sighed quietly, next time she should be early and not late.

Because she was not fully settled, she was startled by the sudden voice behind her, “Are you Sherry?”
